Ageless Beauty: Makeup Tips for Women in Their 30s 40s 50s and beyond

I believe that it is a misconception that beauty and makeup are solely for young people. In fact, as we grow older, the art of enhancing our natural beauty becomes even more important. It’s a means of boosting our confidence, and embracing our ever changing selves.

The fact that beauty and makeup know no age limits should be celebrated! I firmly believe that we should continue to explore and experiment with different looks that make us feel absolutely fabulous, regardless of our age or stage in life.

Beauty has no expiration date, and we all deserve to look and feel our best, regardless of our age. Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, or 50s or beyond, I believe that age is just a number and that you can look and feel fabulous at any stage of life. I want to share some amazing makeup techniques specifically for us as we age beautifully!

(**Some of the links provided are affiliate links**)

Skincare is Key:
Before we delve into makeup, let’s emphasize the importance of skincare. Ensure you follow a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from the sun. Healthy, glowing skin is the perfect canvas for any makeup look.

Hydration and Primer:
As we age, our skin tends to lose moisture, leading to a dull appearance. Combat this by using a hydrating primer to create a smooth base for your makeup. Look for primers with added benefits like illuminating properties or anti-aging ingredients.

Lightweight Foundation:
Instead of heavy foundations, opt for lightweight formulas that provide coverage while allowing your natural skin to shine through. Consider using a tinted moisturizer or a light-coverage foundation to even out your skin tone without feeling heavy or cakey.

Brighten Up with Concealer:
Concealer is your best friend when it comes to hiding under-eye circles, blemishes, or pigmentation. Choose a creamy, hydrating concealer with a peach or yellow undertone to neutralize any discoloration and brighten the under-eye area.

Embrace the Power of Blush:
A pop of blush on the cheeks can instantly revive your complexion and give you a youthful glow. Opt for peachy or rosy tones that complement your skin tone. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks, blending it gently towards your temples for a natural flush of color.

Define Your Eyes:
As we age, our lashes and brows may thin out. Enhance your eyes by curling your lashes and applying mascara that adds volume and length without clumping. Fill in your eyebrows softly with a brow pencil, gel, or powder to frame your face and create a more youthful appearance.

Soft and Neutral Eyeshadows:
For a subtle and sophisticated eye look, opt for soft and neutral eyeshadows. Shades like warm browns, soft taupes, or champagne tones work well to enhance your natural eye color without overpowering your features. Blend the eyeshadow seamlessly for a polished look.

Lip Love:
Keep your lips hydrated and nourished with a moisturizing lip balm or lip conditioner. Embrace lipsticks and lip glosses in flattering shades that complement your skin tone. Opt for neutral pinks, mauves, or rosy nudes for a natural and polished finish. (need to figure out what your skin tone is? Read my post by clicking HERE)

Glow from Within:
To achieve a youthful and radiant glow, incorporate a highlighter into your makeup routine. Apply a subtle amount on the high points of your face, such as the cheekbones, brow bones, and down the bridge of your nose. This will create a luminous and youthful effect.

Smile and Be Confident: The most important beauty tip of all is to embrace your unique beauty and radiate confidence from within. A genuine smile will always be your best accessory!

Is Your Makeup Application Actually Causing You To Look Older? Five Tips To Add Vitality Back Into Your Makeup Routine

Recently, side parts and skinny jeans are being made into an enemy as a tell tale sign of someone’s age. I love skinny jeans and will alway be rocking a side part no matter what age I am. The truth of the matter is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with aging. Personally, the older I get the more I appreciate life!

While I think mature skin is beautiful, and age is truly just a number, there is no reason to make yourself appear older than you are due to makeup application techniques.

Makeup application is an extremely personal thing, if you love the way you look after you apply your makeup keep doing it exactly the way you have been. However, if you are interested in creating a more youthful appearance, here are 5 tips on ways to avoid making yourself look older than you actually are.

Five Tips To Add Vitality Back Into Your Makeup Routine | lookingjoligood.blog
Five Tips To Add Vitality Back Into Your Makeup Routine

Tip 1: Moisturize your skin and neck:

You will never regret giving your skin some extra care. Even if you have oily skin, moisturizing is essential! Moisturizers are used to improve the skin’s hydration, so instead of thinking about it as the oils it produces, think of it as the water content in the skin.  If not properly moisturized, even oily skin can get dried out. Dried out oily skin will in turn only trigger your body to produce more oil.  It is a vicious cycle!

If your skin is tired, oily, dry, and cracked your foundation will sink into those lines giving your face an older appearance.  Cleanse, tone and moisturize your face every day!

One of my favorites has always been Cerave moisturizing cream $13 for 16 oz.

Another cult classic has always been Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel  $27 for 4.2 oz.

Tip 2: Choose the correct color of blush:

I LOVE blush! It is one of the magical makeup products that can be applied quickly and simply, yet will instantly add brightness and life to your face.

Adding blush to the apples of your cheeks can give the face a lifted look, but blush can quickly go from magic to tragic if you choose a color that is the wrong shade.  Depending on your skin tone, a soft peach or rosy hue can add a youthful glow to the face. Choosing a shade that is too dark can make the face look dull and tired.

Two of my current favorite blushes are TARTE Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush $29 USD (available in 12 permanent shades and occasionally some temporary shades) and the ESSENCE Satin Touch Blush $3 USD (available in only 4 shades) One of my favorite blush brushes,The Wet N Wild blush brush, costs less than $2 USD and comes from the drug store.

Tip 3: Choose the correct eyeshadow finish:

The term “eyeshadow finish” describes the texture and appearance of the shadow.  There are 5 basic finishes: matte, satin, frost, shimmer, and glitter.  The finish of the eyeshadow will affect several factors about the shadow: the ease of use, color, pigmentation, and overall result of the final look.

When in our teens and twenties we can get away with almost every type of makeup look, on the other hand more mature skin often reacts differently to the different finishes. Just because skin is more mature doesn’t mean shimmers and glitters have to be completely avoided, it just means they have to be used in a more intentional way.

Personally, I LOVE glitter, sparkles, and shimmer, everything shiny catches my eye. I now use glitter, sparkles, and shimmer on the center of the lid and in the inner corner of the eye. Matte shades used as transitions and in the crease help to frame the eyes.  Strategically placed shadows can draw attention away from sagging lids giving a lifted appearance.

One of my favorite all matte palettes is the urban decay naked ultimate basics and the Tarte Clay Play Face Shaping Palette. Don’t want to spend $30-45 USD on an eyeshadow palette?  Try out the ELF Mad for Mattes Palette. It is only $10 and has 10 all matte shades.

e.l.f. Eyeshadow Palette -Mad for Matte lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Tip 4: Don’t use a heavy hand when applying eyeliner:

Using a heavy-hand when applying eyeliner almost always gives an older look no matter what age you are.   Think back to your 15-year-old self, when trying to make yourself look older, what was the first thing you did?  If you are like me, you probably applied a thick line of black eyeliner around your entire eye.

To appear more youthful, instead of lining the entire eye with a dark eyeliner, start your line in the middle of your upper eyelid, working your way out and thickening it slightly as you go. If you want to line the bottom of your eyes, try using eyeshadow instead of liner.  Using an eyeshadow to line under the eye instead of a eye pencil gives a softer appearance to the eye look. The shadow will still add detail to the look without adding weight to the eyes.

Let’s compare these two pictures: Would you believe that in the first picture I am about 5 years younger than I am in the second picture.

Tip 5: When choosing your lipstick shade, choose shades that are closest to the darkest part of your lips:

Losing fullness and pigmentation in the lips is something that naturally happens as we age. While nude lip colors are quite popular and some shades are beautiful, choosing a nude shade that is too close to your skin tone can cause your lips to blend into your skin causing a loss in your natural lip line. Instead, choose shades that are closer to the darkest part of your lips to keep a more youthful look to the entire face.

I recommend the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks. With 3 different finishes and 87 shades to choose from (yes, that’s correct, 87 shades!😮), there’s definitely a perfect shade for you! You can read all about how much I love the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks by clicking HERE.

There is nothing wrong with getting older, but there is no reason to make yourself look older than you are.

The Top Four Secrets To Keeping Your Long Hair Healthy

For the majority of my teens and twenties…and thirties… I kept my hair styled in a short above the shoulder bob. For the first time in years, I have long hair. Until recently, I had not been concerned with heat protection, special brushes, or detanglers, now keeping my hair strong and healthy is a high priority.

Here are my top four secrets I have adopted to keeping my long hair strong and healthy.

Laura | Lookingjoligood.blog
My current long hair
laura | Lookingjoligood.blog
  1. Protect your hair when it is most fragile
Hair is the most fragile when it is wet. Do not dry off your hair with a towel. The rough friction caused by the towel can cause fragile hair to break. Wrapping your wet hair on top of your head in a heavy towel can also put unnecessary pressure on your hair causing breaking to those fragile hairs around the hairline. Instead, I recommend using an old t-shirt to wrap your hair in. It is not only lightweight, but also surprisingly absorbent. I also recommend getting a brush specifically made for brushing wet hair. While there are several different types and brands, I recommend the one from the brand The Wet Brush.

The Wet Brush

2. Protect your hair from heat
Over time using heat to style your hair can cause hair damage giving the hair a dry and brittle appearance. Heat can also cause breakage and split ends, making it harder for your hair to lie flat. To get your hair back to its healthiest and shiniest, always use a heat protectant when heat styling your hair.
On the recommendation of YouTuber Jessica Braun (@jambeauty89 on IG) I purchased the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Kids Extra-Moisturizing Detangler. She has long beautiful shiny hair. While it is marketed as a kids product it has done wonders for my hair. When I use this spray I am even able to let my hair air dry without it looking frizzy or greasy. When I am heat styling my hair, it not only detangles, but also acts as a heat protectant. The detangling spray along with the Wet Brush used together are amazing at smoothing out and easily gliding through wet hair precteting it while most vulnerable!

Another heat protectant I absolutely love and recommend is the L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Sleek It Iron Straight Heatspray $4 for 5.7oz. My hair is soft, shiny, and super smooth every time I use this spray. It claims to protect hair up to 450 degrees!

3.Use a silk pillowcase and silk hair ties
If you are anything like me, you move around a lot while you are sleeping. All that friction between your skull and pillow can wreak havoc on your hair. I suggest buying a silk pillowcase. The smooth silky texture causes less friction which in turn causes less breakage. Another way damage and breakage can happen is from hair ties. I have been wearing a silk scrunchie whenever I pull my hair back, especially at night when I’m sleeping. I feel like these little silk changes have made a big difference in the health and strength of my hair. You can find the Mulberry Silk Bed Pillowcase I chose by clicking HERE. The nOir Jewelry Ombre Leopard scrunchies I have been using came in a set of three. Click HERE if you’re interested in purchasing a set for yourself.

4. Stop using shampoo
The biggest change that I made… I stopped washing my hair with shampoo. I know, I know, you might not be convinced or want to try it for yourself. I still condition my hair daily when I shower, but about two years ago I stopped using shampoo. This little change has made a big difference. My hair has never been shinier, stronger, or healthier since I stopped using shampoo.

Here is a list of some of my favorite conditioners:
SheaMoisture Treatment Hair Masque for Extremely Dry Hair Manuka Honey and Yogurt
Aussie 3 minute miracle
John Frieda Brilliant Brunette
Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Conditioner

What about you? Do you have long hair or are you growing out your hair? Have you tried any of these methods to protect your hair? Did you notice any difference? Let me know in the comment section below.

Tip Tuesday #108: An Avoidable Makeup Mistake

tip tuesday| lookingjoligood.blog

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Foundation:

When applied correctly, makeup can give you an instant confidence boost, but when not done right it can also be a quick way to make you feel like wearing it was a big mistake.

Being the base, the foundation of your makeup, it is very important to get it right. The formula and color of foundation you choose can make all the difference.

Here are the previous Foundation Tips we have discussed

1: Properly prepare your skin

2: Choose the correct formula

3: Blend your foundation down past your jawline

4: Set your foundation correctly.

5: Change your foundation formula along with the changing seasons.

6: Apply your foundation before your concealer

Today’s Tip is Blend and blend and blend some more!

Makeup is more than just throwing on some color here or there.  It is not just about putting on foundation, concealer, blush, and eyeshadow. Even if you are going for a natural look and you are using neutral shades, it is going to look unnatural if you don’t blend your makeup properly.

The key to natural-looking makeup is blending. Makeup that isn’t blended well can end up looking like a clown mask instead of an enhancement to your beautiful face. Invest in a few good brushes, and practice blending your makeup.

Tip Tuesday #107: Tips for Makeup Organization

tip tuesday| lookingjoligood.blog

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip Never organizes what you can discard.

tip tuesday organization | lookingjoligood.blog

In the last few years, I have chosen a word for the year. This year I have chosen “Intentional.”

I want to be intentional in the things I do and in the things I have around me.

I have a nice house, but it has no storage space! I recently read an article about getting organized. It said when trying to get organized ask yourself these questions about any of the items I am keeping, donating, or tossing?

1. Does this serve a purpose?
2. Is it useful and in working order?
3. Have I used it in the last year?
4. It is the only item that we have that serves this purpose?
5. Would I buy it again today?

If the answer is “No” then I need to get rid of it.

Today’s tip is a bit different than my usual makeup tips but you can apply these 5 questions when organizing your makeup and beauty collection.

Let me know if you try it out and what you think! If you are enjoying these tips every Tuesday you can check them all out by clicking HERE.

Todays’s tip is: Change your foundation formula along with the changing seasons.

Just because your go-to formula works great in the spring and winter doesn’t mean it’ll be as effective during the heat of the summer. Not all foundations perform the same way during different weather conditions.

While you might find that the formula of a hydrating tinted moisturizer is exactly what your skin needs for the dry winter months, whereas switching to a powder or matte formula might work better for your skin during those sweaty months of the summer.

Some of my favorite foundation formula variations are the L’Oreal Paris True Match Mineral Foundation and Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup

Foundation Tip 4: Set your foundation correctly.

If you want your foundation to last all day you have to set it! Choose the right products to finish up your foundation application to make it look fresher and last longer.

Use a loose face powder to set your foundation.  If you are afraid of changing the color of your foundation try a translucent shade of powder.

My favorite setting powder is the Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder and the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder.

Loose Face Powder | lookingjoligood.blog

Use a light hand when applying a setting or finishing powder.  Prevent your skin from appearing dry and powdery by tapping off your brush before applying the powder.  It is always easier to build up and add more than it is to remove and blend out if you have applied too much. Also, if you apply too much the powder may settle into lines making you look older than you are.  A facial spray or makeup setting mist works great to set the foundation and setting powder.

Any long-time reader of Looking Joli Good knows that I love the Mario Badescu facial sprays.

Foundation Tip 3: Blend your foundation down past your jawline

Everyone has a different shade of skin: fair, medium, deep, deep dark, with different undertones: cool, warm, neutral.  We are all different and need different formulas and shades to make our makeup look great.

We’ve all seen the color contrast when someone’s face doesn’t match their neck. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to look as if I’m wearing a mask!  Be sure to always blend your foundation down past your jawline.  It’s a simple tip that makes a big difference when done correctly.

When washing your makeup off, don’t forget to clean your neck as well!

Foundation Tip2: Choose the correct formula

Everyone has a different type of skin. oily, dry, normal, combo, adult acne, teen acne.  We are all different and need different formulas to make our makeup look fierce. Don’t forget to take your skin type into consideration when selecting your foundation.

If you’re on the oilier side,  you want to choose a water-based foundation. Is your skin dry? Matte foundations are not for you,  they will only make your skin look even dryer.

If you make this mistake, don’t be too hard on yourself, we all make mistakes. 😉

Tip Tuesdays Are BACK! Tip #102: Starting with a Good Foundation

Tip Tuesdays are Back!

tip tuesday| lookingjoligood.blog

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Foundation:

When applied correctly, makeup can give you an instant confidence boost, but when not done right it can also be a quick way to make you feel like wearing it was a big mistake!

Being the base, the foundation of your makeup, it is very important to get it right. The formula and color of foundation you choose can make all the difference.  But there are some important things that need to happen before the foundation is even applied.

foundation | lookingjoligood.blog

Foundation Tip 1: Properly prepare your skin

Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, acne prone or a combo of all of them, you must properly prepare your skin before you put any makeup on.

First, wash and tone your face:

My favorite toner is Mario Badescu Facial Spray
As well as the Trader Joes Rose Water Facial Toner

Mario Badescu | lookingjoligood.blog

Second, apply serums and facial oils

One serum that I have recently added to my skincare routine is rosehip oil. This one from Skincare is a great oil that doesn’t cost a lot. A 4 oz bottle costs around $15.  I purchased mine on Amazon, but you can also order it directly from the Radha website.

Some of my favorite serums are from Asterwood NaturalsAsterwood Naturals | lookingjoligood.blog

I have noticed that using this hyaluronic moisture boost serum from Trader Joes has made a big difference in the look and feel of my skin. This is my fourth bottle and I am about to need to get another one.

Thirdly, whether your skin is dry or super oily, you have got to moisturize!

My current favorite day cream is the Pacifica Beauty Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream. I’ve been using it for about 6 months now. As soon as I finish one tube I get another one! That says a lot considering how many other day creams I already have. It is good for all skin types, it’s #vegan as well as #crueltyfree.

Pacifica Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream | lookingjoligood.blog

Lastly, don’t forget to exfoliate!  Your skin will be healthier and look smoother. You can read all about why exfoliating is important in a previous Tip Tuesday by clicking HERE.

Dr Brandt Boxy Charm October 2017 Spellbound | lookingjoligood.blog

My all-time favorite exfoliator is the Dr. Brandt Skincare PoreDermabrasion Pore Perfecting Exfoliator.  A 2 oz tube of this exfoliator is $58 at Sephora as well as on the Dr. Brandt’s website, in my opinion, it is worth every penny.

Follow these few steps and you will have a beautiful face to put your foundation on.  Eventually, you might even find that you hardly need to use any foundation at all anymore.
