The Top Four Secrets To Keeping Your Long Hair Healthy

For the majority of my teens and twenties…and thirties… I kept my hair styled in a short above the shoulder bob. For the first time in years, I have long hair. Until recently, I had not been concerned with heat protection, special brushes, or detanglers, now keeping my hair strong and healthy is a high priority.

Here are my top four secrets I have adopted to keeping my long hair strong and healthy.

  1. Protect your hair when it is most fragile
Hair is the most fragile when it is wet. Do not dry off your hair with a towel. The rough friction caused by the towel can cause fragile hair to break. Wrapping your wet hair on top of your head in a heavy towel can also put unnecessary pressure on your hair causing breaking to those fragile hairs around the hairline. Instead, I recommend using an old t-shirt to wrap your hair in. It is not only lightweight, but also surprisingly absorbent. I also recommend getting a brush specifically made for brushing wet hair. While there are several different types and brands, I recommend the one from the brand The Wet Brush.

2. Protect your hair from heat
Over time using heat to style your hair can cause hair damage giving the hair a dry and brittle appearance. Heat can also cause breakage and split ends, making it harder for your hair to lie flat. To get your hair back to its healthiest and shiniest, always use a heat protectant when heat styling your hair.
On the recommendation of YouTuber Jessica Braun (@jambeauty89 on IG) I purchased the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Kids Extra-Moisturizing Detangler. She has long beautiful shiny hair. While it is marketed as a kids product it has done wonders for my hair. When I use this spray I am even able to let my hair air dry without it looking frizzy or greasy. When I am heat styling my hair, it not only detangles, but also acts as a heat protectant. The detangling spray along with the Wet Brush used together are amazing at smoothing out and easily gliding through wet hair precteting it while most vulnerable!

Another heat protectant I absolutely love and recommend is the L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Sleek It Iron Straight Heatspray $4 for 5.7oz. My hair is soft, shiny, and super smooth every time I use this spray. It claims to protect hair up to 450 degrees!

3.Use a silk pillowcase and silk hair ties
If you are anything like me, you move around a lot while you are sleeping. All that friction between your skull and pillow can wreak havoc on your hair. I suggest buying a silk pillowcase. The smooth silky texture causes less friction which in turn causes less breakage. Another way damage and breakage can happen is from hair ties. I have been wearing a silk scrunchie whenever I pull my hair back, especially at night when I’m sleeping. I feel like these little silk changes have made a big difference in the health and strength of my hair. You can find the Mulberry Silk Bed Pillowcase I chose by clicking HERE. The nOir Jewelry Ombre Leopard scrunchies I have been using came in a set of three. Click HERE if you’re interested in purchasing a set for yourself.

4. Stop using shampoo
The biggest change that I made… I stopped washing my hair with shampoo. I know, I know, you might not be convinced or want to try it for yourself. I still condition my hair daily when I shower, but about two years ago I stopped using shampoo. This little change has made a big difference. My hair has never been shinier, stronger, or healthier since I stopped using shampoo.

Here is a list of some of my favorite conditioners:
SheaMoisture Treatment Hair Masque for Extremely Dry Hair Manuka Honey and Yogurt
Aussie 3 minute miracle
John Frieda Brilliant Brunette
Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Conditioner

Does Manuka Honey and Yogurt Really Make A Difference In The Health Of Your Hair? The Results From This $12 Product Will Shock You

Ever since I was younger I have always been obsessed with smooth, soft, shiny hair. I’ve used all kinds of different types of products with various results. I love when I find a winner and hate when it is a waste of time and money!

laura | Lookingjoligood.blog

I’ve been a fan of Shea Moisture kids detangler for a few years now, so I figured I would branch out and try some of their other products. I fell in love, and I have a feeling you will not be disappointed either!

I cannot say enough about the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Hydrate and Repair Protein Power Treatment! There’s a noticeable difference in the feel and look of my hair when I use this treatment.
Marketed more towards curly hair, this product would be great for all hair types.

The scent is amazing. Not coconut or floral or fruity like a lot of hair care products, just a pleasant scent. I use this treatment once a week, and a little bit of product goes a long way, so the 8 oz last a long time.
They also make a conditioner and leave in with the same scent. Priced around $12 each, I 10/10 recommend these hair care products!

So the answer to the question: Does Manuka Honey and Yogurt Really Make A Difference In The Health Of Your Hair? Yes, yes it does!

What about you? Have you tried any thing from the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Line or used many of the other Shea Moisture products? Did you notice any difference in the health of your hair? Do you love the way it smells?? Let me know in the comment section below.

How ’bout Them Samples?! Review #3.1

You may remember that as part of my “strict no buy” I had decided to try to use up a bunch of the neglected samples that I have already received from various places and sample boxes.  I have so many samples that I don’t even remember where I got all of them from originally.  I know some are from ipsy bags, or Target boxes and others from Walmart beauty boxes, this time around one is even from Influenster*.

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

I posted a few weeks ago that I would let you know what I think of each thing and if I would purchase these items based on my thoughts from these samples.  Some products were awesome and I used them up right away, others have taken me longer to use.  This post was getting very long, so I am going to break it into two parts.  (Check out yesterday’s post to read the first half.)

Here’s my review of the second half of the samples from the third group of what I have been trying out…

Loreal Advanced Haircare Smooth Intense Shampoo
Loreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair Shampoo
Olay Active Botanicals
Ren Ever Calm Day Cream
Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo and Creme Rinse

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Loreal Advanced Haircare Smooth Intense Shampoo
Loreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair Shampoo

While I have used the Loreal Advanced Haircare conditioners for a while now, and really enjoy them, I have never tried the shampoos.  These two may be in similar packaging, but they are quite different from each other. I did not enjoy the Smooth Intense Shampoo (pink top).  While overall I don’t mind the scent, I couldn’t ever get a really good lather from it. It is a clear shampoo which always makes me think clarifying, but my hair never really felt fully clean after I washed it with this shampoo.  I don’t have frizzy unmanagable hair, so maybe that is why I didn’t enjoy this shampoo. Based on the samples  no, I would not buy the Loreal Advanced Haircare Smooth Intense Shampoo (pink top).
The Total Repair Shampoo (golden top) has a strange scent that I don’t really enjoy.  It made my hair feel clean and smooth, so I can forgive it for the scent, especially since I condition my hair everyday after shampooing.  A 12.6 ounce bottle of these shampoos costs around $3.99    Based on the samples yes, I would purchase the Loreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair Shampoo (golden top)  These shampoos seem to always be on sale with great coupons available as well.

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comOlay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Toner

This product smells lovely.  I feel like it got the job done and didn’t make my face feel over dry and tight like some toners tend to do. I love to use a toner at night after I remove my makeup and before I moisturize.  It always amazes me (and grosses me out) how much stuff is still left behind even after I scrub my face. A 5 ounce bottle of this toner costs around $14.99.  Based on the sample yes, I would buy this Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Toner.

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comRen Ever Calm Day Cream

I have enjoyed using this day cream.  I feel like for what it is 1 oz is a decent sized sample. I got several weeks use out of this sample and still have some left. It has a nice fresh scent and I really like the way this cream makes my skin feel.  My foundation applies over it well.  Supposedly it protects against free radicals and environmental aggression while combating the signs of premature aging.  Trains skin to be less sensitive.  That is a lot of claims for one product, but hey I am all for protection against “environmental aggression.”  At Sephora and other online sites this cream is $45 for 1.7 oz. Based on the sample yes, I would buy this Ren Ever Calm Day Cream. (Although, while I do like it, I personally wouldn’t pay $45 for it.)

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comShea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo and Creme Rinse

Once again, I am talking about the scent of one of the products…these products smell wonderful! I think it can be described as a strawberry tropical fruity scent with a light hint of coconut.  Later in the days when I used these two products together I always noticed that my hair felt so super extra soft! I also want to add that the sample size was perfectly proportioned.  The shampoo was 15 ml and the creme rinse was 30 ml.  How awesome that they gave extra creme rinse since every one knows that the conditioner always runs out way before the shampoo. A 10.3 fluid ounce tube of Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo costs $8.99, and  a 13 fl oz bottle of Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Creme Rinse costs $10.99.  Based on the sample yes, I would definitely buy this Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo and Creme Rinse.

Overall this was a great group of samples! For the most part, they all smelled pretty great. I have been enjoying using up my samples and have already started on a new bunch.

What about you?  Have you tried any of these products?  What did you think?

Here’s my review of the first half of the samples from the third group of what I have been trying out…

Beauty For Real Eyeliner
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
Jelly Pong Pong Neapolitan Palette
Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comBeauty For Real Eyeliner

I just got this in my ipsy bag in August, but I have gotten so many black liners from ipsy recently that I thought it was time to start using some of them.  I really like this liner.  It is super black and glides on smoothly and easily.  It dries down quickly and doesn’t smudge.  Most days I wear my makeup for around 10-12 hours.  This liner is still exactly where I put it at the end of the day.  I would buy this Beauty For Real Eyeliner based on the sample.

When I got these in my ipsy bag I wasn’t overly impressed.  Once I actually used them I realized that I was wrong.  These shadows are so super pigmented!  Only on swipe across my lid and I have beautiful pigmented.  I would buy this Neapolitan Palette based on the sample.

Look at how beautiful those jelly pong pong eyeshadow swatches are!  That is only one swipe of my finger. Awesome! I love how black the Beauty For Real Eyeliner is.

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comCeraVe Eye Repair Cream

I am a big fan ofCeraVe Moisturizing Cream.  I have used several CeraVe products and have usually been impressed with them.  This eye repair cream is no exception.  While I don’t have too many eye wrinkles yet I am a huge believer in prevention.  This sample is super small, only .08oz, but since the cream is thick and the eye area is so small only a tiny bit of cream is needed. I would buy this CeraVe Eye Repair Cream based on the sample.

how 'bout them samples | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comLaneige Water Bank Moisture Cream

This cream is awesome!  I love the way my skin feels after I use it!  I love the scent of it. It is clean and beautiful.  I wish I had a perfume that smelled like this cream does.  My skin feels super moisturized the morning after I apply this cream A 1.6 ounce jar of this cream costs around $32.  Based on the sample I would buy this Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream.

Overall this was a great group of samples!  I have been enjoying using up my samples and have already started on a new bunch.  Tomorrow will be the second half of the samples.

Weekly Product Highlight~SoapBox Shampoo and Conditioner

I have seen this brand sold at Target, but have never purchased it for myself.  I was happy to see that it was included in the spice voxbox I recently received from Influenster.  When reading about this brand I realized what an awesome company it is!  For every product sold, a bar of soap or a month of clean water is given to a person in need.  Each bottle has a Hope Code printed on it, you can put it into the tracker on the soapbox website to see where your bottle is helping.

They partner with Global Soap Project, a nonprofit that collects hotel soap remnants and remakes them into new bars.
They also work with Splash, an organization that comes alongside local governments and aid organizations to take the clean water infrastructure multinational food corporations use and apply it to orphanages and children’s hospitals.

As for the product itself… I am usually not a huge fan of the coconut scent, but this product doesn’t have an overly coconut smell.  I think it seems a bit more almond like.  It is pleasant. I do like the shampoo, but I have really been enjoying the conditioner. It is thick and creamy, and a little goes a long way.

Both products are color safe, sulfate free and paraben free, as well as free of phthalates, EDTA and artificial colorants.  Happily these are cruelty free, not tested on animals.

SoapBox Shampoo and Conditioner | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

When I put my hope code into the tracker I was told that my bottles would be helping with providing water to Napal and India

The Project: Clean Water and Hygiene Education

Quick Facts

Scope: 650 Public Schools

Start Date: 2007

Projected Exit: 2020

Children Served: 90,503 daily

City: Kathmandu, Nepal

Population: 1,744,240

The city of Kathmandu is growing fastest of all other cities in Southeast Asia due to general population trends of moving from countryside into urban centers and the desire of locals to find economic opportunities and escape a decades-long civil war. Because of this urban growth, water quality levels have been affected. More than 70% of the water sources in the Kathmandu Valley were found to be contaminated with e Coli in randomized water tests, contributing to a 130% higher rate of diarrheal diseases among the urban poor compared to their wealthier peers in the same city. On top of this, they also pay up to 3x as much as their wealthier peers for the same water.

The Project: Clean Water, Hygiene Education, and Sanitation

Quick Facts

Scope: 3,000 Sites

Start Date: 2012

Projected Exit: 2025

Children served: 17,042 daily

 City: Kolkata

Population: 14,112,536

20% of schoolchildren in Kolkata live in slums. Kolkata (Calcutta) is a difficult city to tackle because it has widely available water in slums like these, but it is, almost across the board, contaminated. Splash decided that the best way to drive change within this massive infrastructure was to start with schools because schools are the most consistent platform across the more than 140 wards of the city for a program roll-out, and also the fastest way to begin. By providing 2,000 schools with clean water solutions and hygiene education and 1,000 additional child serving locations like orphanages and shelters, Splash hopes to change the levels of expectation in regard to water quality standards. In addition, Splash has partnered with local organizations to implement sanitation initiatives like With backing from the Indian government, success looks promising!

Why Water?

Without water, soap isn’t much use to anyone! That’s why SoapBox products contribute to clean water initiatives too. Water related diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and water-spread diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of death among children under the age of 5. More children could be saved by fixing this issue than eliminating malaria, AIDS, and measles combined!

Who is Splash?

Our clean water donations are given through our great aid partner, Splash. SoapBox chose Splash because of their focus on providing clean water by use of succinct programs that independently run after Splash exits the community, leaving behind clean water and hygiene education.

Splash cleans water for kids. Using commercially proven technology – the same used by leading global food chains and hotels – Splash secures world-class water filtration for kids who would otherwise rely on unclean water in their schools, orphanages, or other institutions. Beyond this, Splash both creates and delivers hygiene education programs, and also partners with local experts in sanitation, thereby advancing the full complement of WASH (“Water, Sanitation & Hygiene”) interventions required to fight water-borne illness. – See more at: www.splash.org.
