Tip Tuesday #108: An Avoidable Makeup Mistake

tip tuesday| lookingjoligood.blog

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Foundation:

When applied correctly, makeup can give you an instant confidence boost, but when not done right it can also be a quick way to make you feel like wearing it was a big mistake.

Being the base, the foundation of your makeup, it is very important to get it right. The formula and color of foundation you choose can make all the difference.

Here are the previous Foundation Tips we have discussed

1: Properly prepare your skin

2: Choose the correct formula

3: Blend your foundation down past your jawline

4: Set your foundation correctly.

5: Change your foundation formula along with the changing seasons.

6: Apply your foundation before your concealer

Today’s Tip is Blend and blend and blend some more!

Makeup is more than just throwing on some color here or there.  It is not just about putting on foundation, concealer, blush, and eyeshadow. Even if you are going for a natural look and you are using neutral shades, it is going to look unnatural if you don’t blend your makeup properly.

The key to natural-looking makeup is blending. Makeup that isn’t blended well can end up looking like a clown mask instead of an enhancement to your beautiful face. Invest in a few good brushes, and practice blending your makeup.

Tip Tuesday #107: Tips for Makeup Organization

tip tuesday| lookingjoligood.blog

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip Never organizes what you can discard.

tip tuesday organization | lookingjoligood.blog

In the last few years, I have chosen a word for the year. This year I have chosen “Intentional.”

I want to be intentional in the things I do and in the things I have around me.

I have a nice house, but it has no storage space! I recently read an article about getting organized. It said when trying to get organized ask yourself these questions about any of the items I am keeping, donating, or tossing?

1. Does this serve a purpose?
2. Is it useful and in working order?
3. Have I used it in the last year?
4. It is the only item that we have that serves this purpose?
5. Would I buy it again today?

If the answer is “No” then I need to get rid of it.

Today’s tip is a bit different than my usual makeup tips but you can apply these 5 questions when organizing your makeup and beauty collection.

Let me know if you try it out and what you think! If you are enjoying these tips every Tuesday you can check them all out by clicking HERE.

Todays’s tip is: Change your foundation formula along with the changing seasons.

Just because your go-to formula works great in the spring and winter doesn’t mean it’ll be as effective during the heat of the summer. Not all foundations perform the same way during different weather conditions.

While you might find that the formula of a hydrating tinted moisturizer is exactly what your skin needs for the dry winter months, whereas switching to a powder or matte formula might work better for your skin during those sweaty months of the summer.

Some of my favorite foundation formula variations are the L’Oreal Paris True Match Mineral Foundation and Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup

Foundation Tip 4: Set your foundation correctly.

If you want your foundation to last all day you have to set it! Choose the right products to finish up your foundation application to make it look fresher and last longer.

Use a loose face powder to set your foundation.  If you are afraid of changing the color of your foundation try a translucent shade of powder.

My favorite setting powder is the Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder and the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder.

Use a light hand when applying a setting or finishing powder.  Prevent your skin from appearing dry and powdery by tapping off your brush before applying the powder.  It is always easier to build up and add more than it is to remove and blend out if you have applied too much. Also, if you apply too much the powder may settle into lines making you look older than you are.  A facial spray or makeup setting mist works great to set the foundation and setting powder.

Any long-time reader of Looking Joli Good knows that I love the Mario Badescu facial sprays.

Foundation Tip 3: Blend your foundation down past your jawline

Everyone has a different shade of skin: fair, medium, deep, deep dark, with different undertones: cool, warm, neutral.  We are all different and need different formulas and shades to make our makeup look great.

We’ve all seen the color contrast when someone’s face doesn’t match their neck. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to look as if I’m wearing a mask!  Be sure to always blend your foundation down past your jawline.  It’s a simple tip that makes a big difference when done correctly.

When washing your makeup off, don’t forget to clean your neck as well!

Don’t be too hard on yourself, we all make mistakes. 😉

Foundation Tip2: Choose the correct formula

Everyone has a different type of skin. oily, dry, normal, combo, adult acne, teen acne.  We are all different and need different formulas to make our makeup look fierce. Don’t forget to take your skin type into consideration when selecting your foundation.

If you’re on the oilier side,  you want to choose a water-based foundation. Is your skin dry? Matte foundations are not for you,  they will only make your skin look even dryer.

If you make this mistake, don’t be too hard on yourself, we all make mistakes. 😉

Tip Tuesdays Are BACK! Tip #102: Starting with a Good Foundation

Tip Tuesdays are Back!

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Foundation:

When applied correctly, makeup can give you an instant confidence boost, but when not done right it can also be a quick way to make you feel like wearing it was a big mistake!

Being the base, the foundation of your makeup, it is very important to get it right. The formula and color of foundation you choose can make all the difference.  But there are some important things that need to happen before the foundation is even applied.

foundation | lookingjoligood.blog

Foundation Tip 1: Properly prepare your skin

Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, acne prone or a combo of all of them, you must properly prepare your skin before you put any makeup on.

First, wash and tone your face:

My favorite toner is Mario Badescu Facial Spray
As well as the Trader Joes Rose Water Facial Toner

Second, apply serums and facial oils

One serum that I have recently added to my skincare routine is rosehip oil. This one from Skincare is a great oil that doesn’t cost a lot. A 4 oz bottle costs around $15.  I purchased mine on Amazon, but you can also order it directly from the Radha website.

Some of my favorite serums are from Asterwood NaturalsAsterwood Naturals | lookingjoligood.blog

I have noticed that using this hyaluronic moisture boost serum from Trader Joes has made a big difference in the look and feel of my skin. This is my fourth bottle and I am about to need to get another one.

Thirdly, whether your skin is dry or super oily, you have got to moisturize!

My current favorite day cream is the Pacifica Beauty Coconut Probiotic Water Rehab Cream. I’ve been using it for about 6 months now. As soon as I finish one tube I get another one! That says a lot considering how many other day creams I already have. It is good for all skin types, it’s #vegan as well as #crueltyfree.

Lastly, don’t forget to exfoliate!  Your skin will be healthier and look smoother. You can read all about why exfoliating is important in a previous Tip Tuesday by clicking HERE.

Dr Brandt Boxy Charm October 2017 Spellbound | lookingjoligood.blog

My all-time favorite exfoliator is the Dr. Brandt Skincare PoreDermabrasion Pore Perfecting Exfoliator.  A 2 oz tube of this exfoliator is $58 at Sephora as well as on the Dr. Brandt’s website, in my opinion, it is worth every penny.

Follow these few steps and you will have a beautiful face to put your foundation on.  Eventually, you might even find that you hardly need to use any foundation at all anymore.

Tip Tuesday #101: A Makeup Mistake That Makes You Look Older Tip 5: Lipstick

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Lipstick That May Make You Look Older :

Tip 5: When choosing your lipstick shade, don’t choose a nude shade, choose shades that are closer to the darkest part of your lips:

Losing fullness and pigmentation in the lips is something that happens naturally as we age. While nude lip colors are quite popular and some shades are beautiful, choosing a shade that is too close to your skin tone will cause your lips to blend in causing a loss in your natural lip line.

Since aging causes the lips to thin and nude lips cause a loss of the natural lip line, using a nude shade will cause you to look older than you actually are. Instead, choose shades that are closer to the darkest part of your lips to keep a more youthful look to the entire face.

Tip Tuesday #100: A Makeup Mistake That Makes You Look Older Tip 4: Eyeliner

First of all, let’s just talk about that fact that this is Tip #100! Wow! I can’t believe that I have had 100 tips to share!

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Eyeliner That Makes You Look Older :

Tip 4: Don’t use a heavy hand when applying eyeliner:

Using a heavy-hand when applying eyeliner almost always make you look older no matter what age you are.   Think back to your 15-year-old self, when you were trying to make yourself look older what was the first thing you did?  You probably applied a thick line of black eyeliner around your entire eye.

To appear more youthful, instead of lining the entire eye with a dark eyeliner, start your line in the middle of your upper eyelid, working your way out and thickening it slightly as you go. If you want to line the bottom of your eyes, try using eyeshadow instead of liner.  The shadow will still add detail to the eye without adding weight to the eyes.

Let’s compare these two pictures:

LauraLookingJoliGood
This dark liner around and under my eyes adds weight to the under eye area making me look older than I am.

Laura Joli | lookingjoligood.blog

Using an eyeshadow to line under the eye instead of a eye pencil gives a softer appearance to my eye look.

Tip Tuesday #99: A Makeup Mistake That Makes You Look Older Tip 3: Eyeshadow

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Today’s tip is about A Makeup Mistake When Applying Eyeshadow That Makes You Look Older :

Tip 3: Choose the correct eyeshadow finish!

The term “eyeshadow finish” describes the texture and appearance of the shadow.  There are 5 basic finishes: matte, satin, frost, shimmer, and glitter.  The eyeshadow finish will affect the ease of use, color, pigmentation, and overall result of the final look.

When you are in your teens and twenties you can get away with almost every type of makeup look.  The older, er um, I mean more mature, you get the more limited these looks seem to get.

I LOVE glitter, sparkles, and shimmer! I’m like a magpie and everything shiny catches my eye. But when it comes to eyeshadows there is a time and place for shimmer and glitter.

My tip is to use a matte transition shade as well as in the crease to frame the eyes.  We want to draw attention away from our sagging lids! 😉

You don’t have to avoid shimmers and glitters, just use them on the center of the lid and in the inner corner of the eye.Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette Review and Swatches | loookingjoligood.blog

One of my favorite all matte pallets is the Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette

“This petite palette has eight matte wet/dry shades that can be used as a liner, shadow, or brow powder for any look—from understated to amped up. Featuring a step-by-step guide for six eye and five brow shapes, it’s everything you need for creating eye looks on the go.”

Don’t want to spend $25 on a mini eyeshadow palette?  Try out the ELF Mad for Mattes Palette. It is only $10 and has matte shades in it.

I just love matte neutral shadows!

As you can tell from the above swatches, the shadows in the ELF Mad for Mattes Palette aren’t quite as intense as the Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette, but they are still great shadows that blend well.
