The Skin Brightening Effectiveness Of Vitamin C Serums

Since I haven’t been wearing makeup as often during this time of staying home and mask wearing, I’ve been focusing even more on skincare. I love skincare and fully believe that the most important part of any makeup application is well taken care of healthy skin. While certain aspects of skin health are out of our control, there are certain things we can all do to improve the health and look of our skin, like daily sunscreen use, moisturizing, and always removing makeup before going to bed.

When filling out a beauty survey that asks what is my main “skin concern”, I always check the box that says dark spots/skin discoloration and dull skin. While some of these issues are from years of sun exposure while not wearing sunscreen, the usual cure for brightening skin is Vitamin C serums. I want bright skin! Over the years I have used a lot of different Vitamin C Serums, a lot! I’ve used expensive ones, inexpensive ones, and all kinds of in between priced ones too.

Let me give you a quick run down of some of the ones that I have tried recently…

Cerave Vitamin C Serum
Skincare Radha Rosehip Oil
Yes To Grapefruit Glow Boosting Daily Exfoliating Tonic
Asterwood Naturals Vitamin C
Vitamin c serum from Derma-E
Drunk Elephant C-firma day serum

Cerave Vitamin C Serum 1 fl oz for $20 USD I have always had great success with the majority of the Cerave products that I have used. When it comes to Vitamin C serums this one is priced pretty middle of the road at $20, and it works well. I always thought it had a bit of a strange scent to it, but from reading other reviews and talking to others that have used it, I think that is just the way it smells. I have purchased this serum several times.

Skincare Radha Rosehip Oil 4 fl oz for $15. This is a great price for the amount of product, $3.75 USD per ounce. Since it is an oil, it can breakdown some foundations and face products, so it definitely doesn’t work well underneath makeup. I usually used it at night as part of my overnight skincare routine. Over time it added some brightness to my skin but because of the heavy sticky feeling on my skin it is not my favorite.

Yes To Grapefruit Glow Boosting Daily Exfoliating Tonic 4 fl oz for $15 While technically not a vitamin c serum, this tonic boasts that it will brighten the skin while making it glow. Every night when I use this tonic, it always gives my skin a bit of a tingling stinging feeling. I use this tonic every evening after I double cleanse my skin before I moisturize and put on serums. I have used about half of the bottle, so far I haven’t noticed a large enough of a difference in the texture and brightness of my skin to justify the added step in my skincare routine.

Asterwood Naturals Vitamin C 1 fl oz for $13 I purchased these ones over and over again. They have the classic vitamin c hot dog water scent to them. While I did enjoy these serums at the time that I was consistently using them, I haven’t repurchased them in a while.

Vitamin c serum from Derma-E 2 fl oz for $20 USD I started using it in May and just finished this bottle and I have already purchased another one to replace it. It has a nice light scent and doesn’t feel oily or weighty on the skin. It can be worn well under makeup and includes hyaluronic acid. I think it is a good product and I’m looking forward to continuing using it.

 C-firma day serum | lookingjoligood.blog
Drunk Elephant C-firma day serum

Drunk Elephant C-firma day serum 1 fl oz for $80. I faithfully used this every single day for five months until I had used the entire bottle… I noticed some slight brightening to my skin, but overall I did not see enough of a difference to justify that high of a price point for something that I can get a similar quality product at a much lower price.

Overall, do I think that Vitamin C serums brighten the skin the way they promise…yes and no. With consistent use, I have noticed that my skin has a nice look to it. Have I noticed any lightening and brightening of sun discoloration, age spots, and dark spots?…No, not really, at least not an overwhelmingly noticeable difference that I would continue to pay large amounts of money for.

Out of all the vitamin c serums I have used which one do I recommend…drum roll please… I prefer the Vitamin c serum from Derma-E with a close second runner up Cerave Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C serums can be all over the place when it comes to pricing. Just because a product costs more does not mean that it is more effective. The derma-e product is a quarter of the price of Drunk Elephant C-Firma, while twice the amount as the Skincare Radha Rosehip Oil per ounce.

The best advice I can give you when it comes to brightening the skin and decreasing premature age spots…

Use sunscreen daily to prevent sunspot and premature aging

Do Not Be Racist Or Make Excuses for Those That Are…Let’s Talk About Rush Limbaugh

I am never one to get into discussions about political things online, but…
After Rush Limbaugh, a prominent right wing talking head, recently passed away from lung cancer, many Christian conservatives were getting their feathers all ruffled over negative things being said about him. They feel the need to defend a man that had been profiting by spreading divisive hate for years. A man who, for thirty years as the most listened to person in radio, used his loud voice and strong words to chew up and spit out anyone who was different than him. For thirty years he spread hate, racist bigotry, misogyny, and cruelty.

Theses Christian conservatives in turn have taken to revising history to praise him as a blameless patriotic saint. A saint who in 2010 while criticizing the school lunch program, said that if hungry children have no food at home and can’t afford McDonalds, “There’s another place, if none of these options work, to find food. There’s always the neighborhood dumpster. Now you might find competition with homeless people there, but there are videos that have been produced to show you how to healthfully dine and how to dumpster dive, and survive until school kicks back up…” This type of comment is just the tip of the iceberg of the vitriol of hate he spewed for decades.

Just a few highlights of the cruelty of Rush Limbaugh include: ridiculing Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s cancer diagnosis and Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease. He mocked people who needed public assistance, hated Civil Rights activists and Native Americans. Took pleasure in the deaths of people who had AIDS. Made jokes about Eric Garner’s 2014 death via chokehold by an NYPD officer.

The 2020 winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by U.S. President Donald Trump, while on television in 1993 inferred that Chelsea Clinton was an ugly dog. While holding a picture of the 13-year-old, Rush Limbaugh said “Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?”

I know that as a 12 or 13 year old girl, Chelsea being called a dog by a “respected” adult male on national television, whether as a “joke” or not, must have negatively stuck with her for years. He showed by picking on a child that no blow was too low for him and nothing was off limits.

Laughing at the expense of others should not be accepted as mainstream.

a voice of reason | lookingjoligood.blog
A voice of reason as long as you look and think exactly like he does. Thanks Franklin Graham for once again standing up for kindness and Christ like love…

Let’s ask ourselves why do a lot of Christian conservatives like and defend him?
Is it because he is pointing them towards the two greatest commandments to Love God and Love others? Or maybe he is encouraging them to follow what is said in James 1:27 where the Bible describes true religion as caring for the widows and the orphans while not being corrupted by the world… Or might it actually be because he was getting away with, being paid for, and praised for saying out loud the rude, mean, racist, bigoted, misogynistic, and hateful things they are thinking and wanted to say themselves yet know they shouldn’t?

James 1:27 | lookingjoligood.blog
What is true religion?!

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. James 1:27

Taking care of and generously loving those who can never repay you, those who you cannot profit from, those who have nothing to offer in return is what true Christ like love and godly religion is.

Finally… Just in case you were wondering…. This might come as a shock to some “conservative” people, but Christians, no matter how conservative you are, being racist is wrong! It’s a sin! You cannot follow the second greatest commandment to love your neighbor and say and post racist things! Saying, posting, even thinking rude mean racist things disguised as patriotism: Still Wrong! Don’t fool yourself that your “patriotic” hate is justified. Please stop!

Pro-Trump Christians: Stop, Please Just Stop!

Pro-Trump Christians: Stop, please just stop! You, you have allowed this to happen.

You’ve encouraged the raging narcissist in the White House to think he is God’s chosen and in turn an untouchable god.

You praise him for placating you with lies of his “pro-life”  stance, while turning a blind eye towards his hatred of “losers”, the poor, women, immigrants, people of color, children in cages, mistreatment of his staff and advisor, and hundreds of thousands of Americans that have lost their lives due to his mismanagement of this virus.

You’ve heard the disgusting things he’s said and you’ve made excuses for him.

You’ve given reasons for his bad behavior and explained “what he really meant”

You’ve chosen to keep your head in the sand while being warned.

Despite your fearless leader calling his supporters and proud boys to action on several occasions, you are somehow shocked by these occurrences, or even worse defending them, or blaming someone else! Shame on you!

Your over-the-top opinions about Trump have divided us at family gatherings and church meetings.

The rest of us wonder what happened to the person we once knew. How has my friend, neighbor, family member, been so blinded by such obvious insanity? How can such an intelligent person be so easily fooled?

You claim self-righteousness and moral high groundedness on certain key issues choosing to be “right” rather than kind, all while ignoring the second greatest commandment to “love thy neighbour as thyself. “(Matthew 22:39)

We have all been watching your twisted version of Christianity. There is no truth and there is no love. Stop pretending there is!

Pro-Trump Christians, please do everyone a favor and STOP! Stop giving moral and spiritual insight because clearly, you don’t have any to offer.

Goodbye Sweet Tessie, Forever In My Heart

We made the extremely hard decision to say goodbye to Tessie this past week.🌈

The Vet came to the house so we could be with her. Despite knowing it was the right decision and that this day was approaching, we weren’t ready. My heart is broken. I miss her so much it’s hard to breathe. 💔😭💔

My only consolation is that during this time of Covid sheltering in place, we’ve all been together non-stop. I’m so so so thankful for that time with her. No guilty feelings about her being alone for long periods of time while we were at work or school. 💔😭💔

My best friend forever, my loyal side kick. There is a Tessie sized hole in my life. She will be loved forever and missed always. ❤️

Tessie Mae: April 30,2006-August 11, 2020 🌈❤️🐼😭💔🌈

I love you sweet Tessie

First Impressions of the Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara (Waterproof Very Black)

Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Mascara | lookingjoligood.blog
Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara

I went through a phase a few years ago where I was trying a new mascara every other week looking for the perfect one. Instead of perfection, I discovered lots of duds and I figured out exactly what I didn’t like about different mascaras.
Mascara is definitely one of those things that is super personal. Some people like dry mascaras, some like wetter formulas.  Some people want volume, others want length.  Some people despise clumps, others want to have a spidery lash look. It’s all personal preference. Mascaras that I hate might be your favorite ride or die product.
Personally, I have long, thin, super straight downward-pointing lashes that have a hard time holding a curl. Personally, I want long, curled, thick, upward-turning lashes… but then again, who doesn’t, right?  I prefer a natural-looking volumizing mascara with zero clumps!
Then one glorious day, I landed on the Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express, in the yellow tube, and I heard angels singing and I haven’t looked back since…
Maybelline VOLUM' EXPRESS® THE COLOSSAL WATERPROOF MASCARA IN GLAM BLACK. | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
That is until yesterday when I decided to try out the Falsies waterproof mascara in Very Black also by Maybelline…
It’s not a far cry from my holy grail mascara, in that it’s still by Maybelline and still part of the Volume’ Express line.
The difference is in the wand and brush. The Falsies has a curved brush and a flexible neck on the wand. The application was much easier than I expected. The formula is a bit wetter than I like and the end results after two coats are a bit clumpier than I prefer with less overall lengthening than I am used to with the waterproof Colossal Volum’ Express.
Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Mascara | lookingjoligood.blog
As I have worn it throughout the day I haven’t noticed any flaking or smudging. There has been no irritation to my eyes.  My lashes are a little less curled and bit less clumpy as the day has gone on. As with all waterproof mascaras, I used an oil-based cleanser to remove it, it came off without any issues.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Falsies Mascara
Luckily for you, you get to see an up-close and personal picture of my eye.

Mascara is one of those things that I refuse to pay a lot of money for.  There are so many great products at the drugstore that a high-end mascara is not necessary.  Costing just around $7 USD, it’s overall not a bad mascara.  I have a feeling that it might be the type of mascara that’s perfect after being used for about two weeks after being opened.
So far not a 10/10, but I’m going to keep using it and see how it goes…
What about you?  What is your personal mascara preference?
Have you ever tried this Maybelline The Falsies mascara? Do you like length, volume, or a natural look? Are you someone that prefers a bit of clumping? Do you have a holy grail mascara that checks all the necessary boxes for you?  If so, I’d love to hear what it is and what you like about it in the comment section below!

Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 100

Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 100

We’ve been spending a lot of time at the beach this summer. The sunshine and salty air, along with the sound of the waves is so refreshing and relaxing. ⛱️☀️
I have fair skin that will somewhat tan…kinda. 😆 I always burns every time I am out in the sun. 🥵

Sunscreen is absolutely essential for my beach days! Over the years I’ve tried out so many different types and brands. I’ve finally found a winner! 🏆

This neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 100 has worked amazingly! The last three times I have gone to the beach I have had zero burn! 🙌

It has a nice sweet scent that doesn’t give me a headache, which is a major issue I’ve had with other sunscreens.

10/10 would recommend! 👍
