Tip Tuesday #89: How to apply your bronzer

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Today’s tip is about how to apply your bronzer to get the best results.

I am so pale, therefore, I NEED bronzer! Along with blush and mascara, it is one of those magical makeup products that can be applied quickly and simply, yet will instantly add life to your face.

Here are my tips on how to get the best results from your bronzer application.

  • Apply powder bronzer after all of your cream products have been set.
  • Using a clean fluffy brush, dip your brush into the bronzer, tap away any excess, don’t skip this part of the step
  • Sweep a small amount onto the areas where your skin would naturally pick up sun:
    • the top of the cheeks
    • on the nose
    • across the forehead
    • a touch on the chin
  • Blend the color up and out along the tops of your cheekbones and forehead.
  • Apply more as needed
  • Blend, blend, blend!

For shimmery formulas, only apply to the higher points of the face, similar to how you would apply highlighter.

Keep in mind that even if you are using the world’s best makeup, if you don’t use the correct technique it’s not going to look good on you.

Tip Tuesday #88: Contour vs Bronzer

Here’s another tip for Tip Tuesday:

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Today’s tip is about the difference between contour and bronzer

While both bronzer and contour products are usually a shade of brown, and they both go on the face, they are actually quite different.

Bronzers are generally warm-toned with orange or red undertones.  It is used to add warmth and life to the face in the areas that the sun would naturally hit your skin: the top of your forehead, nose, and cheeks.

Contour products are usually cool toned. The areas where the contour product is applied are the temples across the forehead at the hairline under the cheekbones and jawline, around the nose and under the lips.

While matte bronzers can be used for contour it is not ideal since contour is designed to mimic shadows on the face and not to warm up the completion.

Bronzing vs Contour | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Don’t confuse bronzing your face with contouring.  These are two different techniques.

Sometimes First Impressions are Wrong…

Beaute Basics 3 Tone Bronzer

Beaute Basics 3 Tone Bronzer | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

When I first pulled this little bronzer out of my ipsy bag, I thought great another tiny sparkly bronzer sample from ipsy that I will never use.  I even sent my sister in law a text complaining about it and making fun of the sparkles in it. The swatches were nothing special and I figured that if I used it it would probably be for eyeshadow. (You know, because I don’t have enough neutral eyeshadows already. Haha!)

Do any of you try out new makeup at night before you wash your face and get ready for bed? Who else does this?  Anyone?  Sometimes I take so long getting “unready” my husband has got to be wondering what I am doing in there.  Well, mystery solved.  I tried out this bronzer before washing my face and couldn’t believe how beautiful it is.

I figured that maybe it was just looking good because of the other makeup I still had on so I tried it again the next day, and the next, and I have been using it every day since.  I am a pale girl, so I need bronzer to help me look alive.  This bronzer has been working amazing at livening up my completion.

I have never heard of this brand before and when I checked out the website linked from ipsy I couldn’t find the bronzer trio on the site. I don’t know how much a full size costs, or where I can find it to purchase one, but for now I am really enjoying this little sample.

Sometimes first impressions are dead on, and other times after trying something out a few more times you realize that it is actually a great product.

“Recent” Target Haul Review

Well, I have really been trying not to buy new makeup…easier said than done!  I bought all this stuff waaaay back in February and have been using most of it ever since.

wp-1459775350166.jpg

Here is a list of what I got (with links):

Essence matte sun club bronzers This bronzer smells like summer and sunshine that is a plus.  That is kinda where my love of it ends. It is just ok.  I found that it tends to be a bit on the orange side rather than bronze.  It works fine for adding color to my face, but it is definitely not my go to bronzer.

Garnier Clean + Nourishing Cleansing Oil For Dry Skin – 4.2 fl oz So, what can I say about this cleanser to convey how much I LOVE it!  I wear waterproof mascara everyday and on the days that I work I always wear waterproof eyeliner.  This cleanser takes off my waterproof makeup perfectly and makes my face feel moisturized at the same time.

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily Anti-Acne BB Cream – Light/Medium (2 oz)  I LOVE this one too! I recently wrote an entire post singing the praises of this BB Cream.

It is hands down my go to every day base.  It is very easy to blend and gives light to medium coverage.  One of my favorite things about it is that as it brightens and evens out the skin it still has a very lightweight feel on the skin.

Neutrogena Pore Refining Daily Cleanser  Despite the fact that I bought this all the way in February, I still haven’t used it yet.  The main reason that I haven’t tried it yet it because we went on vacation to Florida right after I bought it and the bottle warns “Sun burn alert”  Because it has an alpha and beta hydroxyl in it it can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Even though I haven’t tried it yet…Here is what the product claims…”Pore Refining Daily Cleanser starts working on contact to instantly reduce the look of large pores and improve skin’s tone and texture. Week after week, it continually reduces the appearance of pores for clearer and smoother skin.
This dermatologist-tested alpha and beta hydroxyl formula delivers visible results by removing dead skin from your face while smoothing over rough, uneven patches for improved skin texture. It penetrates to deeply clean pores so they appear smaller and less visible. Skin is instantly smoother and more even toned. Minimize the appearance of pores with continued daily use.”

Olay Regenerist Luminous Overnight Facial Mask Gel Moisturizer, 4.5 oz  This is another major winner!  I LOVE this one too!  I don’t use it every night, maybe two or three times a week, but it leaves my skin feeling so nourished and smooth.  I highly recommend this Olay Overnight Mask!  It is a bit pricy for a drugstore product at $24, but it is totally worth every cent!  It has a nice clean fresh scent that is not too overpowering.  As it says in the name it is a gel not a cream and I really like the way it feels on my skin as well as the way it makes my skin feel.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio  I actually bought this for my sister.  I already have this one and I know that I love the Wet N Wild Walking on Egg Shells Palette.  It is a great little eye shadow palette for creating a beautiful eye look. I love these smooth and creamy shadows.  She really likes these shadows as well.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Ombre Blusher  Ok, so here is the thing about this blush…I really really like this product, but NOT as a blush.  When put onto the cheeks it kind of gives an ashy appearance, it isn’t a good look!  But when used as a highlighter  or an eye shadow it is gorgeous!  I love to use it as an eye shadow on a quick 5 minute makeup days!

Of course, I paid for all of this stuff myself.  I wish that someone else had bought it for me, that would be nice😉

Bronzer 101

Let’s face it, about this time of year, if you live in the North East like I do you are probably a bit Vitamin D deficient!  While I can’t help you with that, I can give you a few tips on how to look like you have just returned from a stay at the beach.

Adding life to your face can be as simple as using bronzer!

While using bronzer to add color is a simple step, proper application isn’t always as simple.  Keep in mind that the goal is to add color, but not to give the appearance of an all over tan. Bronzer should be applied where the sun would naturally hit the face, the forehead, the cheeks, and the nose.

Bronzer is applied after your foundation and concealer have been put on. Choose a bronzer that works with you skin tone.  To apply find the apple of the cheek by smiling and lightly dust your cheeks with the bronzer. Then using a wide brush blend up and blend down.  You can put blush on top of it and even a little bit of shimmer and highlight on top as well.

Bronzing vs Contour | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Don’t confuse bronzing your face with contouring.  These are two different techniques.

While bronzer is probably the quickest way to add some color and life to your face, a little bronzer can go a long way, remember that you can always add more, so start off lightly and build it up as needed.

~Weekly Product Highlight~ Bronzer ~Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess~

Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess

Tarte's Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comWhile I often try to give recommendations for affordable drugstore products, this is one that I just have to recommend a high end product for… Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess is the best bronzer I have ever used!  None of the other bronzers I have tried have even come close to this one!  This shade works great for most skin tones. It is subtle enough to give a natural looking sun kissed glow and is not overly dark or muddy looking. Sometimes I will even use it as an eyeshadow, it is perfect in the crease. It is also very long lasting, buildable, and little bit goes a long way.

At $30.00 for 0.32 oz this bronzer is not cheap, but it is so good that it is definitely worth the price.  I highly recommend this bronzer!

What does the Tarte Website have to say about this bronzer?…
“Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer is tarte’s best-selling bronzing powder in the iconic park ave princess™ shade.

~Weekly Product Highlight~ Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge~

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

This sponge is amazing even for full coverage foundation. It hides blemishes much better than a brush giving a more natural skin like finish.  The flat side is really good for stippling foundation, allowing you to build up more coverage where you need it and get rid of excess foundation where you don’t. The pointy side is great for application of makeup under the eye area.  The sponge can also be used to blend in liquid highlighter and cream blushes.

While you can use it damp or dry, I suggest that you definitely use it damp!  When damp, it makes application easy and gives a flawless look.  To dampen it, hold under running water and squeeze it until it has almost doubled in size.  Once the desired size is reached squeeze it out extra hard to remove all the excess water.

Pros:
The price is great!  ($4-$6)Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge |lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Very close dupe to the Beauty Blend
Give an even and flawless application
Soft and Easy to use
Works for any skin type
Easy to clean when used damp

Cons:
Although the sponge doesn’t seem to absorb too much makeup, I do find myself needing to use more foundation than when I apply foundation with just my fingers.
When used dry it is not as easy to clean

What does the Real Techniques Website have to say about theMiracle Complexion Sponge:
“Optimize your beauty routine with this 3-in-1 multi-functional sponge.

  • Rounded sides blend large areas of the face with a repeated dabbing or “stippling” motion.
  • Precision tip covers blemishes and imperfections.
  • Flat edge for the contours around the eyes and nose.

Its versatile design evenly blends makeup for a smooth, enhanced finish.
Made from polyurethane foam which is latex free.
For best results, replace the miracle complexion sponge every 1-3 months.”
