Pretty Peonies, Helpful Ants, and Blooming Memories

This time of year the arrival of peonies in the Northeast brings not only an enchanting fragrance but also a burst of vibrant colors to gardens all over New England. While they only bloom for about 7-10 days, they make a big impact.

Peonies offer a remarkable variety of hues and shapes, each possessing its own unique allure. From the classic white, pink, and red varieties to the more uncommon yellow, coral, and lavender hues, these flowers never fail to captivate with their beauty. Some peonies feature single or semi-double blooms, while others boast the luxurious layers of petals found in the double and bomb types. The diversity of peonies reflects the rich tapestry of life itself, with each individual having their own distinct qualities and contributions.

Interestingly, the presence of ants on peonies is a common sight. While it may seem peculiar, ants play a significant role in the blooming process. The tight buds of peonies secrete a sweet nectar that attracts ants. As the ants crawl over the buds, they help to loosen the petals, enabling them to unfurl gracefully. In a way, this symbiotic relationship can be seen as a metaphor for our own journeys through life.

Just as ants aid in the blooming of peonies, we, too, rely on the support and assistance of others to flourish. Throughout our lives, we encounter countless stages of growth and development. Like peonies in their various stages of bud, bloom, and fading, we undergo transformations and transitions. Along the way, the presence of loved ones, friends, and mentors can help nurture our growth and open doors to new opportunities.

Just as ants gently coax peonies to reveal their full glory, the guidance and encouragement we receive from others can facilitate our own blossoming. Whether it’s the wisdom imparted by our grandparents, the kindness shown by friends, or the mentorship offered by teachers, these interactions play an invaluable role in shaping our lives. May we all continue to bloom and lend a helping hand to others, just as the peonies and ants beautifully intertwine in their harmonious dance of growth and transformation.

These exquisite flowers not only bring a burst of vibrant colors and delicate fragrance to the region but also bring to my mind memories from my childhood. Growing up, my grandmother always grew flowers, specifically I remember her peonies and rhododendrons. I remember as a small child looking forward smelling the beautiful scent of the peonies. Even to this day, the sight of peonies in full bloom compels me to stop and take in their delightful scent.

Peonies hold a special significance in my life, not only because of the memories they evoke but also because of the small lessons they taught me. In a way, peonies symbolize the stages of my own life. They start as tightly closed buds, representing the potential within. With time and nurturing, they unfurl into magnificent blossoms, revealing their true splendor. Similarly, I have experienced moments of growth, transformation, and the blooming of my own potential, thanks to the guidance, help, and support of loved ones.

Just as the ants that help open the peony buds, the presence of others has been instrumental in my own journey. The encouragement, love, and support of family, friends, and mentors have played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Their belief in me has helped me overcome obstacles and embrace my own unique path.

As I look at the blooming peonies, I am reminded of the interconnectedness of life and the beauty that can be found in shared experiences. The peonies in my life have not only brought beauty and nostalgia but have also taught me the power of nurturing, resilience, and the importance of the people who help us bloom.

I used to be a staunch believer in leaving flowers in the garden. My perspective shifted in 2020 when my youngest sister shared the joy of fresh cut blooms throughout her house. Since then, I have enjoyed the vibrant colors and sweet scents transforming my own space. Last evening, I noticed raindrops starting to fall, I ran outside to save these beautiful peonies from losing all their petals.

As the coming rain threatened to wash away the delicate petals of the peonies growing in my own garden, I cherish the fleeting moments I have with these magnificent flowers. They serve as a reminder to appreciate the beauty around me and to express gratitude for the people who have nurtured me along the way. I am committed to cultivating my own garden of peonies and also being like the ants helping others bloom in their own unique ways.

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Remember the bud I shared the other day that was full of potential?  In just a few short days that small bud has turned into this amazingly beautiful flower.  Time, water, and sunshine produced this gorgeous flower from the small bud.  It is hard to imagine that all of these large beautiful petals were contained in that small bud.  This picture cannot even come close to capturing the amazing beauty of what this flower looks like in real life.

What Is Your Potential…

Po·ten·tial

adjective: Having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.

Sometimes we just need to give ourselves a little bit more time to reach our full potential.

Potential | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

While this bud is beautiful in its own way, it has so much potential inside of it to be amazing!  If we were to only judge this flower on what is seen right now at this very moment the flower is cut short of what it actually is meant to be.  In just a few short days this bud will blossom and bloom into a large beautiful flower.  Right now at this moment it is full of potential.  All it needs is a little bit of sunshine, water, and time.

It is easy to judge ourselves and others on what we see before us, when in actuality we all have so much potential inside of us.  Sometimes all we need is a little sunshine, water, and time to reach our full bloom.

Just Bloom!

Recently I have been thinking about the effects of comparison and competitiveness . I am not one of those crazy competitive people.  I don’t get mad if I lose a game or get upset if I am not always #1.  I don’t need to win at every single thing I do. I don’t feel the need to constantly prove to everyone that I am the best at everything.  But…when it comes to certain things that I think I am good at I do have a super competitive spirit.

A Flower Does Not Think of Competing With the Flower Next to It. It Just Blooms! | lookingjoligood.wrodpress.com

I think that having a spirit of competitiveness is both a good and bad thing.  It is often nice to have competition to help give a push for us to be better. Some people bring out my good competitive side.  These people make me want to be a better version of myself. A few years ago while at my husband’s Aunt’s funeral,  I remember as everyone was talking about what a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and person she was, I was inspired to be a better person myself.  She lived such a positive and influential life that I wanted to be a better person.

Other people bring out the negative competitive side of me and make me want to be better than they are.  See the difference…While competition is not a bad thing, I think that comparison usually tends to be a negative thing. Knowing the difference between the two is not always easy.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”-Theodore Roosevelt

I think in this world of social media, it is so hard not to get sucked into comparing ourselves with others. Due to social media we see so much more of people’s “private” lives. The problem is that we are usually comparing all of our flaws with the snapshots of a  edited filtered picture perfect life.  Their reality is that they also have flaws that we do not see.

Sometimes, I have to stop and ask myself “Why am I doing what I am doing?”  Sometimes I know exactly why.  Sometimes the answer is clear and positive.  Sometimes I don’t really know what my motivation is.  Sometimes I have to really take a step back and be honest with myself, why am I doing what I am?  I don’t always like the answer that I have to give myself.

Don't compare your Beginning with a Middle | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Galatians 6:4

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,

My husband has the perfect balance of competitiveness without comparison.  He doesn’t let others effect him negatively. His competitive spirit gives him motivation without being a detriment. He definitely has a solid self worth.

Who is your competition. | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

I am glad when I can recognized when feelings of comparison and competitiveness are affecting me negatively. When I feel myself comparing and being competitive in a negative way, I have been trying to distance myself from the source. I remind myself that the only person that I need to be competing with is who I see in the mirror.  I need to focus on being a better version of myself than I was yesterday… it is not always easy.

2 Corinthians 10:12

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.
