Healing a Relationship With Yourself and With God While Navigating the Trauma of Spiritual Abuse

For the last several years I’ve been on a personal spiritual journey. I’ve been discovering what I believe and why I believe what I do. Spurred on by finding myself frustrated by different difficult situations in my church community, I found myself broken and questioning. I don’t yet have all the answers that I am looking for. The journey has had its ups and downs and twists and turns. Along the way, my beautiful kind sister, Sarah has been instrumental in helping me to navigate.

Today I am sharing a piece so graciously and eloquently written by her from her heart. She put into words what’s been knocking around my head and heart for months and years!

My beautiful kind sister Sarah Aheron

At the risk of vulnerability, I feel compelled to share this.

Over the past few years, I have participated in multiple conversations and shed many tears with people from different walks of life who have been deeply affected by spiritual abuse. Books, websites, podcasts, conferences, and even whole ministries are devoted to helping those who have experience with it.

For those of you who have no experience with this kind of abuse, praise God, but please be aware that the person sitting beside you in Bible study, worshipping behind you in service, or praying next to you in life group may be dealing with deeply seeded wounds planted by spiritually abusive systems, doctrines, and/or leaders. And for every person still struggling to engage in community with other believers after having experienced spiritual abuse, there are countless more who physically cannot enter a church building without reliving trauma.

“Whether subtle or obvious, spiritual abuse is a form of trauma that undermines your relationship with yourself and with God.”

The Allender Center defines spiritual abuse for their “Confronting Spiritual Abuse” conference as, “The use of religious or spiritual power and authority to control, coerce, or perpetrate harm. In many ways, spiritual abuse is a distortion or exploitation of God’s power and authority to manipulate or control others’ bodies, personhood, relationships, and autonomy through shame and fear. Spiritually abusive systems and organizations and spiritually abusive people use religious texts, theologies, and practices to harm relationally, emotionally, and physically.”

Spiritual abuse, as defined here, is the very antithesis of 1 Timothy 1:7-10, where we read,
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.”

The gospel is redemptive. It heals, restores, transforms, forgives, empowers, and frees. So, brothers and sisters, if you have suffered or are currently suffering, not for this gospel’s sake, but at the hands of some other gospel; please know that there is hope and healing as we rest in faith through the grace Jesus Christ displayed in his ultimate sacrificial suffering on the cross.

You are not alone on your journey. You belong. You are wanted...not for how well you perform; how hard you work; how consistently you attend gatherings; how connected you are; how committed you are to institutional standards; how well you dress; how intensely you serve, how eloquently you speak; how much money you give; how well-behaved your children are; how glowing your reputation is; how well you fit into a mold; how talented, gifted or educated you are; how dedicated you are to a cause…but you are wanted because you are accepted in the Beloved. Chosen. Adopted. Redeemed.

I know our healing journey may be long, and unsteady; but I believe the “Confronting Spiritual Abuse” conference may be a place to start or rest along the way.

In many ways, spiritual abuse is a distortion or exploitation of God’s power and authority to manipulate or control others’ bodies, personhood, relationships, and autonomy through shame and fear.

Thank you, Sarah for your contribution.

Happy, Mother’s Day 2021…

Happy, Mother’s Day…
To some, like me, Mother’s day is a day of happiness and celebrations. Some of us feel surrounded by love on Mother’s Day. We have wonderful mothers and grandmothers and are blessed with great children.

That is not the case for everyone. Some people view Mother’s Day as a painful reminder of loss. Loss of a mother or grandmother, loss of a child, or loss of a relationship, loss of a dream, or loss of expectations. Seeing others celebrate might exacerbate those feelings of loss.

So for today, I am saying “Happy, Mother’s Day…”
to those who are Mothers 💐
to those who are Mothers to be💐
to those who lost Mothers💐
to those Mothers who have lost children💐
to those women who are step-mother’s 💐
to those women who are longing to be Mothers💐
to those women with difficult Mother relationships💐
to those women with difficult child relationships💐
to those women who have chosen not to be Mothers💐
to those women who are dog and cat Mothers💐
to everyone who is celebrating their Mother💐

Happy Mother’s Day

The Best Way to Prevent Bankruptcy

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 speaks about what happens when things are done without love…

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.
If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing.
If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
(The Message Bible: emphasis added by me)

So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.

1 Corinthians 13 4-7 goes on to tell us what true love looks like…

Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

The Best Way to Prevent Bankruptcy Is By Being Loving In All You Do.

Happy Valentine’s Day Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare

Ever since I learned this sonnet in high school for a play I was in I’ve loved it. For some odd reason, at random times I find myself reciting it in my head.   It is such a beautiful poem about the long-lasting effects of love despite the passing of time.  Happy Valentine’s day from the master of love himself, William Shakespeare

Sonnet 116

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov’d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.

The Crashing Ocean Waves of Grief

Find Your Strength | lookingjoligood.blog

One year ago, in the courtyard garden of the Spaulding Hospital Cambridge, I sat crying under this beautiful tree. One of my favorite people had just passed away. It’s hard to believe that an entire year has already gone by. 🌸

I miss her all the time! I think of her often. Whether it’s because I think of something funny she said or did, or because of something I wish I could text or tell her. She would have HATED social distancing and isolation! 🌸

ocean of grief | lookingjoligood.blog

Last night my Grandma passed away…😭 Due to her age and medical conditions, it wasn’t a surprise, but at the same time, I wasn’t expecting to lose her last night.🌸

She was a spunky lady. She always had an interesting story to tell, her nails perfectly done, and sunglasses on. 💅😎She was the epitome of the Shakespeare quote from Midsummer Night’s Dream “Though she be but little she is fierce” I’m going to miss her, but I know she’s so happy to be reunited in Heavenwith my Poppop and their dog Chase.🌸

Grief is a crazy thing, it’s like standing in the ocean being hit by waves. Sometimes the thought of the people I’ve lost makes me laugh and sometimes I cry.🌸

There’s no expiration date on grief. It could be twenty years later when you feel the wave crash against you as if it just happened yesterday. For now, I’ll take the waves one at a time…laughing and crying. 🌸

If you love someone, tell them. Don’t wait! You never know when you might not have another chance.🌸

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11🌸

What is Love?

I read this devotional this morning and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to share it with you.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
1 Corinthians 13:4‭-‬7

Rooted in Love

“According to Jesus, love of God and neighbor are the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:36-39). Indeed, He said that “‘All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments’” (Matthew 22:40). In other words, every other commandment is in some way a commandment to love. One should not covet, for example, because that would not be an act of love toward one’s neighbor.
Our verse for today lists four characteristics of Godly love.
First, love bears all things. The person who truly loves God and neighbor should not be easily offended or hurt. Love puts up with things. It does not allow perceived slights and offenses, from God or people, to easily get to us and undermine our love.
Second, love believes all things. That is, the person of love always thinks the best of God and neighbor. With respect to God, love does not attribute wrong motives and intentions to what God says. With respect to neighbors, love is not overly suspicious of what people say. This does not mean that love is naïve. After all, the Bible also says that we should “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (I John 4:1). But it does mean that we should not be quick to suspect the worst of our neighbors.
Third, love hopes all things. With respect to God, this means that love trusts that God will fulfill His promises and that He will bring His glorious plan of redemption to complete fulfillment. With respect to neighbors, this means that love expects the best of people and believes that they can change for the better with the help of the Lord.
Finally, love endures all things. If we are to truly love God and neighbor, then we should not easily give up on love. No matter what happens to us – trials, troubles, tribulations, offenses, hurts, wounds – we should not cease to love. Sometimes God allows things to happen that we may not like or understand and sometimes people do things that wound us or hurt us in some way. The person of love continues to love and endures these things.
The two greatest commandments are great because they are central to what human existence is all about. Everything we say and do is governed by them. Today, and every day, therefore, let love reign.”

Is There Still HOPE?!

Barbara HOPE | lookingjoligood.blog

HOPE: /hōp/
noun
1. a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.
synonyms: aspiration, desire, wish, expectation, ambition, aim, plan, dream,
2.a feeling of trust.
verb
1.want something to happen or be the case.
synonyms: expect, anticipate, look for, wait for, be hopeful of, pin one’s hopes on, want

I lost a good friend last week, Barbara.

I had so much HOPE that God would heal her, HOPE that she would be whole again, HOPE that things would return to normal, HOPE that cancer would lose and we would win her back again. HOPE that this would be the end of a chapter in her life and not the end of life.

That wasn’t God’s plan.

Does that mean that I have lost HOPE?!
Absolutely not! I HOPE that I can be as kind and friendly as Barbara was. I HOPE that like Barbara when people leave my presence they feel better and happier for having been with me. I HOPE that I can praise God despite not being able to breathe. I HOPE that my life can be like Barbara’s, at the mention of my name people cry because they miss me but quickly start to smile and laugh because of all the happy and good things. I HOPE it can be said of me “well done.”

Today we will celebrate the wonderful and full life of Barbara. I have HOPE because I will see her again in Heaven.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a HOPE.
Jeremiah 29:11
