Here is another tip to help you to get what you want out of your trip to the hair stylist…

Last week’s tip: Be realistic about what you are asking for and how it is going to look on you.  Take into consideration your hair’s type, tone, and texture, as well as your face’s shape.

During in Nursing School when I was living in the dorms to make extra money I gave a lot of hair cuts.  Over those years I got a lot of practice figuring out what type of style they wanted and what would look good on them.

This weeks tip…

Bring a lot of pictures with you! You can never bring too many pictures.  Bring pictures of both what you do want, as well as what you DON’T want.  Sometimes the pictures of what you don’t want are more helpful that the ones of what you do want.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so start looking for both what you do and don’t want and bring them along with you!

I totally wish that Pinterest had been around back when I used to do all those hair cuts!

Let me know if you try it out and what you think.

Here is a tip to help you to get what you want out of your trip to the hair stylist…

First of all, be realistic about what you are asking for and how it is going to look on you.

Sometimes we look at a picture of a celebrity and think that we want to have the same style that they have.  Sometimes we forget to take into consideration what our own hair’s type, tone, and texture is.  Also think about the shape of your own face as opposed to the face of the celeb that you might want to look like.

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have heart shaped faces, so if you have a round or square shaped face, you won’t look as good with the same haircut that looks best on the two of them.

Although, if you have a heart shaped face like Taylor, consider a layered cut with lots of volume and a side part.

If you have a round face like Sarah Hyland or Jennifer Lawrence your best bet is to tone down the volume.  You don’t want to make your round face look wider than it is long. Wearing your hair with a deep side part will help slim your super-symmetrical face.

Maybe you are like me and have an oval face.  Lucky for us, we have the most adaptable face shape when it comes to choosing a hair style. Pretty much any length, cut, or part will work.

Maybe your face is square shaped like Olivia Wilde or Lucy Liu.  Soft curls, long layers, as well as shorter in the back longer in the front hair styles are best for you.

Of course, you can wear your hair whichever way makes you feel most beautiful.  But if you are looking for a change, these are some good tips to follow.

I love to wear long dangling earrings!

It is so annoying to be looking amongst your jewelry for the perfect pair of earrings and only being able to find one of them.  One way I keep all my earrings organized and easy to find is with buttons.  I insert the earrings into the button holes and have a simple yet ingenious way to keep my earrings together and organized.  Now whenever I am looking in my jewelry box for a pair of earrings they are already together and easy to find.

Baby wipes are not just for babies!

If you are a mother, you will already know all about this tip, I am not telling you anything new, but baby wipes are amazing for so many things. One of my favorite things to use baby wipes for is removing my makeup.  Since the wipes are made for delicate baby skin they are also great for the more sensitive skin of the face.

I usually get the scent free and sensitive skin ones.  Not only are they  gentle, but also efficient at getting the job done.  Also, baby wipe cost so much less than the wipes that are specifically labeled as “makeup remover wipes”.

This weeks tip has nothing to do with beauty or makeup, but it is still a great tip!

I was using my microwave the other day and what I was heating up exploded all over the inside.  So gross and so annoying to clean up.  This weeks tip is a simple way to effortlessly clean your microwave.

Look at how gross and dirty the inside of my microwave is! Yuck!

Fill a microwave safe bowl with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water. Put the mixture into the microwave and heat it on high for 10 minutes.  Let it sit in the microwave for an additional 5 minutes.  Remove the bowl and wipe down walls, top, bottom and door of the microwave.  (Be careful when you take the bowl out, it will be hot!)  The steam from the vinegar water mixture will have loosened everything from the inside of the microwave making it quick and easy to wipe clean.  It is like magic!

If you have sad straight eye lashes like I do, there is hope and this tip is for you!

Personally, my super straight eyelashes will curl beautifully… only to become super straight and very sad again as soon as I apply mascara.

This is what my eyelashes look like before I curl them.

Problem solved by only using waterproof mascara.  While that is a great tip that I learned from Wayne Goss, that isn’t actually this weeks tip….

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Great Lash mascara is a cult classic for a reason!

Some mascara formulas are awesome in the regular version and terrible in the waterproof version.  So, when I want to use a regular non waterproof mascara, but also want my lashes to stay curled, I first apply a thin layer of waterproof mascara concentrating at the roots of my lashes, then using the regular non waterproof mascara I apply a second and third (sometimes even a fourth) coat of mascara.  This keeps the curl to my lashes while still being able to get the benefits of whichever regular mascara I want to use.

Now that it is summer time it is more important than ever to protect your skin and hair.  If you have a swimming pool or swim in the ocean the chlorinated and salt water can reek havoc on your hair.

This tip was actually given to me by my sister in law.  We both have daughters with long hair and dealing with the aftermath of a day spent swimming can be tough for all those involved.

While I try to always deep condition my daughter’s hair after she has been swimming, instead of just treating it, preventing the damage in the first place is always a much better idea.

Before going into the pool (or ocean or lake or where ever you might be swimming) completely wet your hair with fresh clean water.  This simple step  will minimize the amount of water your hair can absorb while you are swimming.  After swimming, I always wash my daughters hair with clarifying shampoo and deep condition it.

Mascara is one of my favorite makeup items.  Finding the perfect mascara is not always easy.  Sometimes the formula is great but the brush is terrible.  It may be that the brush is awesome, but the mascara smudges and flakes.

My tip for this week…

If you find a mascara wand that you love, keep using it.  If I buy a new mascara and discover that I hate the brush, before I write it off completely, I will take a wand/brush that I like from a mascara,  ( after cleaning it off really well with rubbing alcohol between mascara bottles), and use it in the new mascara.  Sometimes that is all that it takes. It might not be that the mascara formula is one that I don’t like, it might just be the brush.

This weeks tip is a really simple yet super important tip…

When in doubt blend blend blend it out.

If you are trying to achieve a natural makeup look, one of the biggest beauty mistakes that you can make is not blending enough.  Harsh makeup lines are a dead give away to where your natural beauty ends and your makeup begins.

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Of course I blend?!”  I’m not just talking about contour, eyeshadow, and blush, I mean all of it.  The simple step of blending your eyeliner (especially if you use liner on the lower lash line) will be a game changer for your makeup look!  I have a specific smudging tool, but you can use a q-tip or a small eyeshadow brush.

How about those lips, yup, blending your lipliner will add another level of natural looking beauty.  This simple step will also help your lips to look more natural as your lipstick wears off.  Once again, using a q-tip or even your finger works well if you don’t have a specific smudging tool.
