Giving Thanks and the Importance of Being Thankful

thankful | lookingjoligood.blog

Thankfulness is more than just saying “thank you” or “I am thankful.” It’s a way of seeing the world that can change how we experience life. I’ve come to realize that being thankful isn’t just something you do when things are going well—it’s a practice that can bring peace and perspective even when life feels hard and heavy. Gratitude is about pausing to appreciate what you have, the people around you, and even the lessons hidden in the difficulties and challenges. It’s not always easy, but it’s always important.

Thanksgiving By Ralph Waldo Emerson For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends. | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

For me, thankfulness often starts with the small things: the cozy warmth of my home, the sound of laughter from my kids, cuddling with my sweet dog, dinner time around the table with my family, or even the simple comfort of a quiet moment after a busy day. These aren’t extraordinary things, but they’re what make everyday life full and enjoyable. When I take time to notice them, I find myself feeling lighter, happier, and better able to face whatever’s ahead. Gratitude reminds me that joy doesn’t have to come from big achievements or perfect circumstances—it’s already right here, waiting to be noticed and appreciated.

I’ve learned that being thankful for the people in my life strengthens my connections with them. Whether it’s taking a moment to thank my kids for their kindness or letting a friend know how much their support means to me, gratitude deepens relationships. It helps me focus on what’s good about the people I care about instead of dwelling on little frustrations. And the more I express my gratitude, the more it seems to grow—like a habit that gets easier and more natural over time.

There have been moments in my life when gratitude felt far away—times when grief, stress, or disappointment seemed to overshadow everything else. But looking back, I’ve found that looking for something to be thankful for, no matter how small, makes a difference. It might be the kindness of a stranger, a supportive word from someone I trust, or just the reminder that hard times don’t last forever. Gratitude doesn’t erase pain, but it does give me something steady to hold onto. Being thankful can act as a light guiding me through the dark times.

Being thankful has taught me to slow down, to look for the good in my life and the people around me, and to trust that even hard moments have their place. It’s not always easy, and I don’t always get it right—but when I practice gratitude, life feels richer, and I feel more connected to what really matters.

So often, it’s easy to focus on what’s wrong or what’s missing. But when I choose to focus on what’s right, even in the smallest ways, I notice how much I already have. Thankfulness has become more than just a reaction to the good moments—it’s a way of living that makes every moment more meaningful.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Love, Laura

When Measuring Up Leaves Me Falling Behind

I have recently finished reading (for the second time) a book called Why Her? 6 Truths We Need to Hear When Measuring Up Leaves Us Falling Behind by Nicki Koziarz.  This book has really opened my eyes and made me think about comparison in a different light. From the lives of two sisters/wives from the Bible, Rachel and Leah, Nicki brings up a lot of great points about the pitfalls of comparison .

Why Her? 6 Truths We Need to Hear When Measuring Up Leaves Us Falling Behind by Nicki Koziarz | lookingjoligood.blog

Here is a little overview of the contents of the book:

“If success is defined in the eye of the beholder,
who are you letting behold your success?

Nicki Koziarz is confronting the comparison question: Why her?

Through two striving sisters in the Bible, Nicki uncovered six truths’ we need to hear when trying to measure up leaves you falling behind.

These six truths will help you:

·      Stop staring at her success and find satisfaction in yours.

·      Find contentment with your life without being complacent in who you are becoming.

·      Gain godly wisdom to answer the Why Her silent question of your soul.

Someone will always be ahead. But that doesn’t mean you’re behind. Because Truth, like always, will set us free. And free women don’t have to measure up to anybody. Not even her.”

Here is an exerpt from Truth three: You Don’t Always Have to be Okay:

Yes, it’s okay not to always be okay. But it’s not okay to NEVER be okay. That’s not what God wants for us. He needs us to know he’s a good God who has good things for our lives. In fact, He wants us to be more than just okay. His word is filled with so much power and authority, with so many examples and clear statements of His goodness. It is good to say, “God is good”, but it is better to know God’s goodness.

When we’re in a position of not feeling okay, there’s a time to climb out from under the bed covers. I know it’s where we feel like staying sometimes, but if we want the breakdown to lead to the Breakthrough, we need to get up and actually go through it.”

If you are like me, and for that fact most women, you have probably found yourself at one time or another stuck in the trap that comparison sets.  I highly recommend you read this book by Nicki Koziarz.

The Very Best Snapshots of Life

Why is it that we compare our very worst to the very best of the snapshots of life that others post? 🤔 I don’t know about you, but I’ve been guilty of doing it!

Lord, help me today to be grateful for all that I have and not let comparison steal my joy!

Focusing on Gratitude

At the beginning of 2018 I mentioned in a previous post that in lieu of a New Year’s resolution, I have claimed the word “gratitude” for the year.

I was recently reading a devotional focusing on Job’s gratitude despite having seemingly lost everything important to him. Having what seemed like nothing left, he still said: “the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” Job 1:20-21
Blessed be the name of the Lord | lookingjoligood.blog

Having lost everything, Job still thanked and blessed God! I was so convicted by this! How do I personally react when simple things don’t go my way… Never mind losing everything important to me?! Do I still have a grateful heart?!  It’s easy to be thankful when the sun is shining…but what about when the sky is gray, there’s icy snow on the roads, the kids are up during the night coughing with fevers, the car won’t start, and the pipes burst?

The difficult circumstances of life can make it hard to be grateful!  It is not easy to say “Thank you, Lord.” when it is a terrible horrible no good very bad day! Whether or not we see God’s purpose, we can be thankful to our Heavenly Father? In every situation, God sees an opportunity for us to trust Him and glorify Him.
Both in trials and blessings, a grateful heart returns praise to God.  I have been praying for God to give me a grateful heart, not just for the people I love, the things I have, and good times, but also for the hard experiences and people that aren’t always pleasant to be around.
Whether in trials or blessings God is good! With God’s help I need to set my mind and heart towards gratitude during the summery sunshine or wintery gloom.

Gratitude: warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received; thankful

Job 1:21

And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

What’s the Word for 2018?

Happy New Year, 2018!

Happy New Year | lookingjoligood.blog

I’m not really one for New Year’s Resolutions, what about you?

I am more of a resolve to make a change when it is needed whether it is January 1st, April 18th, or November 24th. That being said, this year I am going to try something a little different. This is something that has been on my mind for a few weeks now…

I have been thinking about claiming a word for the year.

I feel as if claiming a word has a much more positive spin to it than a new years resolution.  Most New Year’s Resolutions are tossed aside or forgotten by the end of February… Whereas, a word of the year is something that can be focused on, and meditated on, in little spurts rather than an everyday task or one big thing.

Here are a few of my potential words:

  • Contentmentsatisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else. ease of mind.
  • Joy: the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation:
  • Healththe general condition of the body or mind with reference to soundness and vigor
  • Kindness: of a good or benevolent nature or disposition, sympathetic attitude toward others, and a willingness to do good or give pleasure.
  • Organization: to form as a whole consisting of interdependent or coordinated parts, especially for united action:

One of the words in the top running for this year is actually something that I have already been trying to focus on: Gratitude!

Gratitude: warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received; thankful

During the month of November, I blogged daily about what I am thankful for. I really enjoyed intentionally focusing on being grateful. After taking the time every day to list out all the things I have to be thankful for I realized just how true it is that gratitude turns what we have into enough!
