Tip Tuesday #3

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Sometime making little changes can make a big difference in you makeup/beauty routine.

Here is another tip for Tip Tuesdays…

When applying eyeshadow into the crease, instead of looking straight on into the mirror, tilt your head back and look down into the mirror.  Just moving your head into this different position will help you to visualize the eye bone better giving you a better guide where to add your crease color.

This tip is also helpful for when you are applying eyeliner as well as false lashes.  You can better visualize where you want to add the liner and the lashes by tilting your head back and looking into the mirror at this different angle.

If you try out this tip, I’d love to hear how it works for you!

Tip Tuesday #2

Tip Tuesday: Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Here is another tip for Tip Tuesdays…

You may recall that this winter has been a bit rough on my skin! While I don’t recommend this tip if you have oily skin, and I probably won’t be continuing to do this during the summer, this week’s tip is one that really helps relieve dry dull looking skin.

I have recently been adding one drop of oil to my foundation.

All I do is add one drop of oil to my foundation, mix it up and than apply my foundation with my beauty sponge as I normally would.  Less is more, so don’t over do it with the oil, one drop is all you need.

It makes the foundation apply more easily and glide on so smoothly.  It also leaves the skin looking fresh and glowy. Who doesn’t want fresh glowy skin, right?!

I’m not taking about coconut oil or grapeseed oil from the kitchen (although they are awesome for makeup removal), I mean a lighter beauty oil that is specifically made for the face. I have been using Nourish Organic Pure Hydrating Argan Face Serum that I recieved in my October ipsy glam bag.

Let me know what you think if you try it out!

Tip Tuesday #1

I’m going to be starting a new series called…Tip Tuesdays!

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

I hope to give you some little tips and tricks that help to make a big difference in your daily makeup/beauty routine!

Tip #1: If you want your eyeshadow to blend more evenly and easily without creasing or fading, you need to try this tip:

Working one eye at a time, prime your eyelid with an eye primer, paint pot, or even use concealer or just your foundation.  Then immediately set with a translucent powder.

When you go to apply your eye shadows you will notice how much more easily they will apply.

This little step will create a smoother canvas on your eyelid to lay down your colors.  You’ll be amazed at how even cheaper, harder to work with shadows will blend more easily.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Things I Have Learned

I recently celebrated my birthday!

I had a wonderful day filled with indulgence in lots of delicious foods that I haven’t allowed myself to eat in a while. Look at that Stuffed French Toast!!!

Happy birthday to me! | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

When I was younger I used to think that being “old” must be terrible.  I was totally wrong!

So far I have appreciated life during my 30s so much more than I did in my 20s.

A lot of that appreciation has come with natural maturity as well as lessons that can only be learned through living life.

Beautiful flowers I got for my birthday from my husband and kids. lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Beautiful flowers I got for my birthday from my husband and kids.

Here is a simple list of a few of the things I have learned during the first half of my thirties…

  1. Always wear sunscreen!
That beautiful smooth skin will not stay smooth and beautiful for long.  If you keep getting “just a little burn” everytime you’re out in the sun, it will turn into something less than beautiful as time goes on!
  2. Exercise is so fun!
I hate to admit is, but before I was in my 30s, I didn’t see the necessity of daily activity/exercise.  I’m glad that this is a lesson I learned at the beginning of my 30s, and I plan to continue with this healthy lifestyle.
  3. I cannot eat whatever you want and stay thin/healthy!
I really wisht that this wasn’t true.  Unlike the exercise lesson, this one I just recently really learned and I am glad that I have finally learned how to eat healthy.
  4. The book is always waaaaaaay better than the movie!
I didn’t start reading for pleasure until I was 31.  It took me 31 years to realize that one of the most enjoyable things in my life could be found at the library!
  5. Don’t say I don’t like a food until I have tried it.
I have always been a very picky eater!  On my 30th birthday, we went out to a very fancy restaraunt for dinner.  Instead of ordering the food “without this” or “with this instead of that”, I decided right then to for once just order it the way it was found on the menu. That meal was one of the best I have ever had, and itchanged my eating/ordering habits.
  6. People are NOT against me, they are FOR themselves.
Stop and think about this one, this was an epic lesson!!! No one is actually working against me, they are working for what is best for themselves.  It is not about you, it is always about them.
  7. Stop doing things that make me unhappy.
I’m not talking about necessary responcibilities, I’m talking about the added stresses we put onto ourselves.  If you don’t want to do it, just say no.  Once you say “no” a few times it gets a lot easier to say.
  8. Happiness is not determined by what is happening around you but instead by what is happening inside of you!
  9. It is ok to distance myself from relationships that are not healthy.
We all have them, those people who we feel obligated to hang out with even though we don’t enjoy being around them.  I refer to these people as fattning food/nap people.  Because after spending time with them I feel like I need to eat something fattening and take a nap.  Just because you have known someone for several years doesn’t mean that you have to stay “close” friends.  If you feel depressed and tired after spending time with someone, it is time to let that relationship go! I always tell my children, you can still be kind to someone without having to be best friends.
  10. It is ok to be afraid, just don’t let fear be the thing that controls me.
Be motivated by your fear to to things that make you uncomfortable.  Some things are not as scary as you may think they are.  You’ll be amazed at how strong you really are when your fear is faced and overcome. II Timothy 1:7 says “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

These are some of the lessons that stick out in my mind.  I am sure that there are lots and lots more, but I will save those for another post.  I’m so glad that every day is an opportunity to start over and learn new lessons!

Get The Most Out of Your Workout

Get More Out of Your Workout | lookingjoligood.worpress.comA very common New Years resolution is to workout and get healthy!  I am resolving to continue to remain as healthy as I possibly can this year. If you also made a resolution to be a healthier you in 2016, here are a few tips and tricks to help you keep that resolution!

Get More Out of Your Workout | lookingjoligood.worpress.com

Just do it!  You may not feel like working out, but let me tell you, you will not regret it!  You will only regret the times you skipped working out not the times you did it!

Stop making excuses!  You are your own worst enemy!  Trust me, I know all about the head games and excuses!  You are not really as busy as you think you are!  Make time to get in a quick exercise session.  You can spare 30-45 min to become a healthier person. You will be so glad that you did!

Be consistent!  The more often you exercise the greater impact it will have on your life.  As with many things consistency is what brings results.  Long term health is more important than short term results.

Get More Out of Your Workout | lookingjoligood.worpress.com

Don’t waste your time!  If you are going to take the time to work out give it your all!  Don’t take the easy way out, do your best.  Be completely present in what you are doing.  Think about the muscles you are working

Have a plan!  If you are new to exercising and working out, make sure you have a plan!  Have you ever heard the saying “Fail to plan, plan to fail”? It is so true.  Having a plan will also help you to not waste your time.

Keep moving!  Even if you feel like you might keel over, keep moving.  Even if you have to move super slowly, keep moving.  If you are moving then you will keep going, if you stop to take a break, you may be able to convince yourself that you don’t need to continue.  Keep moving!

Get More Out of Your Workout | lookingjoligood.worpress.com

Start strong, stay strong, end strong!  This is similar to don’t waste your time and keep moving.  Anything worth doing is worth doing right!  Make the most out of your time.  An intense 30 minute workout is worth way more than a half effort hour long session.

Don’t give up!  Even if you miss a day here or there, or haven’t been consistent at all, that doesn’t mean you have to give up!  Just remember, January may be the start of the new year, but you can start a new healthy lifestyle any day you want to!  Most people give up on their New Years resolutions by February. You got this, don’t let that be you!  Don’t give up!

Good Luck in 2016!

Simple Morning Routine Hacks

Simple Morning Routine Hacks | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com I am not actually a huge fan of the word HACK, it reminds me of someone with pneumonia or bronchitis…anyway, now that I have grossed you out and ruined that word for you as well…
Anything that is going to make my life easier is a good thing! I love “life hacks”

Now that I am working, I am no longer able to spend endless amounts of time getting ready in the morning.  I have a few tips and tricks to being able to get out of the house quickly.

  1. Do not wait until tomorrow morning to do what you can do the night before!!!
I can not stress this point enough!  No matter how early I wake up in the morning it always seems as if the time flies by way faster than it does later in the day.  I always make our lunches the night before, but I also lay out all of our clothes (everything for every body: socks, undershirts, underwear and bra)  I also get my makeup and jewelry ready as well.
I even go the the extent of putting my body and face lotion, toothbrush and paste out ready to be used.  In the morning, every second saved counts!  You will also sleep better knowing that you are prepared for the next morning.  Which brings me to my next point…Never put off until to morrow what you can do today -Thomas Jefferson | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
  2. Do Not Hit The Snooze Button, Don’t Do It!!!
When you are setting your alarm the night before, already have in your mind a determination that when your alarm goes off in the morning that is when you are going to get up and get up!
  3. Keep it simple!
I love to do all kinds of different makeup looks, I like to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t.  Early in the morning before work is not the time to try new looks and products!  I also get easily distracted.  Knowing this about myself, I have a container that I keep all of my daily makeup essentials.  I have one BB cream, one face powder, one blush, one neutral eyeshadow quad (I use this for my brows as well), one eyeliner, one mascara, one lipgloss and one of each type of necessary brush/applicator for each of these products.
This little box of makeup essentials has saved me so much time!  Not only am I not searching through all of my makeup, I am also not distracted by all the possible looks that I could create.
  4. Keep a grab and go bag!
Lets face it, some morning things just don’t work out the way you have them planned.  Even some of the most planned and prepared for days can go wrong.  For those such days, I have a “Grab and Go Bag”.  In my grab and go bag I have my absolutely essential morning supplies: tinted lipgloss, mascara, blush, brow pencil, and pressed powder.
An easy way to look pulled together when you are actually a crazy mess is to accessorize!  I also keep a pair of neutral earrings, a bracelet/watch,  and a neutral scarf in this bag.   No one who is running late has time to stop and put on earrings and a scarf, right?!  But if you have these things in an easy to grab bag, you can look put together even when you are not. Then, when things calm down and you aren’t as rushed you can take a bit of time to freshen up.  Don’t forget to return your earrings, watch, and scarf back back into your grab and go bag for the next time you are rushing out the door.

Hope you find these simple tips and tricks helpful for your morning routine!

Hair Color and Skin Undertones

Hair Color and Skin Undertones | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com Experiencing a good hair day has the power to completely transform your entire perspective! Although I’m unsure of the exact reasons behind it, I can confidently affirm that it holds true without a doubt. Knowing that your hair looks good can add an immeasurable amount of confidence to the way that you feel.

A lot of people are fortunate enough to be born with a beautiful head of gorgeously colored hair. Take my son, for instance, he was blessed with stunning auburn red hair. It’s not uncommon for random women to approach him and express admiration for his captivating hair shade. Naturally, being a young boy, he finds it rather bothersome when they do so. 🙂

Were you aware that, similar to undertones being crucial for selecting foundation, they play an equally significant role when it comes to coloring your hair? (If you don’t know what your skin undertone is read my post by clicking HERE!)

Unless you are going for a shockingly major change, try to stay within two shades of your natural hair color for the best results.

If your skin has warm undertones, it’s advisable to opt for hair colors that have warm tones as well. On the other hand, if your skin has cooler undertones, it’s best to stick with hair colors that have cooler tones. An effortless method to determine the undertones of a hair dye is to observe its name: if it includes “platinum” or “ash,” it signifies a cool-toned color. Conversely, if the name contains “golden” or “mahogany,” it indicates a warm-toned color.

Cool Skin Tones

Hair Color and Skin Undertones | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Here are Hair colors that Cool Skin Tones Should Avoid:
Individuals with naturally cool undertones should refrain from selecting hair colors that incorporate gold, yellow, red, or bronze tones. These warm hues can potentially give the appearance of a sallow complexion and make you look more tired or drawn.
Hair color that Cool tones look best with:
For individuals with cool undertones, the most flattering hair color shades include glossy raven-wing blacks, cool ash browns, and a range of cool blondes spanning from mink to platinum and icy white. When it comes to highlights, opt for wheat, honey, taupe, or ash shades. Stick to neutral, ash, and beige bases when selecting a hair color. Additionally, you have the advantage of being able to pull off many vibrant “unnatural” hair colors such as lipstick reds, burgundies, orchids, and purples, which can add excitement to your look.

Warm Skin Tones

Hair Color and Skin Undertones | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comHair Color that Warm Skin Tones Should Avoid:
To maintain a flattering look, it is recommended to avoid hair colors that have blue, violet, beige, or ash undertones if you have cool-toned skin. These shades have the potential to “wash out” your skin color and may not complement your complexion as well.
Hair color that Warm tones look best with:
For individuals with warm undertones, hair colors such as dark, warm browns, chestnuts, rich golden browns, auburn, warm gold, and red shades tend to be the most flattering. Additionally, highlights in warm tones can enhance your hair’s appearance. Consider incorporating golden blondes, copper streaks, and golden brown shades as highlights to add warmth to your hair color. Colors with a red-orange or gold base will generally complement your complexion well.

Few Guidelines to go by when coloring your hair at home:

When it comes to artificial hair color, regardless of the shade or tone, it’s important to understand that simply choosing a lighter shade will not achieve the desired lightening effect. The general rule of thumb in hair coloring is that hair color cannot lift or lighten existing hair color. While you can alter the tone of your hair, the level or lightness cannot be changed through coloring alone. If you wish to achieve a lighter shade, it may require additional steps such as bleaching or using hair lightening products. It’s recommended to consult with a professional hairstylist for the best approach to achieve your desired result. Go see a professional if you want to lighten your hair.
When opting for a darker hair color, it is advisable to select a warm and golden tone to avoid ending up with an ashy appearance. Choosing a warm tone can help maintain vibrancy and prevent your hair from looking dull or lackluster. In cases where you have grey hair that is appearing too light or if the hair color is not effectively covering the grey, it is recommended to allow the color to remain on your roots for at least 40 minutes or even longer. Grey hair is typically resistant to color and requires a longer processing time for the hair color to fully penetrate and provide adequate coverage. By extending the processing time, you increase the chances of achieving the desired result in terms of coverage and color intensity.
Hair Color and Skin Undertones | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comI recently watched Fantastic Four with my son. In the movie, Jessica Alba, a naturally beautiful actress, portrayed the character Susan Storm with a blonde hair color that may not have been the best match for her skin undertones. Now, don’t get me wrong she is absolutely beautiful, but whoever decided that this was the shade of blonde for her didn’t know much about matching hair color with skin undertones! It seems that the hair stylist may not have taken into account the importance of aligning hair color choices with an individual’s skin undertones. As a result, she appeared washed out throughout the film. It serves as a valuable lesson, no matter how beautiful you are, consider your own skin undertones when deciding on a hair color to ensure a harmonious and flattering overall look. By matching your hair color choice with your skin’s undertones, you can enhance your appearance and achieve a more cohesive and complementary style.

What Is Your Undertone?

What Is Your Undertone? And why does it matter when choosing makeup?

While the color of your skin may change, the color of your undertones will not.  Finding your undertones is the first step in figuring out what shade of foundation and shades of makeup you should be wearing.  It will also help you to determine if you are choosing the correct colors of clothing.

When trying to get a foundation color match, knowing your undertones is one of the most helpful things to know. There are three types of undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. If you have warm undertones, your skin will tend to be golden, peachy, or yellow. If you have cool undertones, your skin will usually be pink, red, or even blue, neutral undertones are just that, neutral a mix of warm and cool.

If you don’t know your undertones, here are a few ways to can help you to determine what your skin’s undertones are…

what is your undertone? |lookingjoligood.wordpress.com
Look at the inside of your wrist
. What is the main color of your veins? Generally, they will look either blue/purple if you are cool toned or green/olive if you are warm toned.  If you are neutral, the veins will be both blue/purple and green. (That’s me, both purple and green veins)

How do you look when you wear yellow or orange?
One of my sisters looks great in peachy corals and yellows.  My other sister looks sickly when she wears them.

What is your undertone? |lookingjoligood.wordrpress.com
Which of these three sets of clothing looks the best on you?

What type of jewelry do you prefer on your skin? Gold (warm) or Silver (cool)?  For me, although I love the look of silver, and although I am neutral, I generally tend to look a bit better in gold jewelry.

What happens to your skin when you are out in the sun without sunscreen?
Do you burn fast or turn pink? Then you are cool toned
You can get a tan but burn if I stay out too long?  Neutral
Do you
 tan? That means warm
(PSA: Always wear sunscreen!)

DeepDark Brown Eyes | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comWhat color flecks are in your eyes?
Golden or hazel (warm) Blue or gray (cool) A little bit of both (neutral)
If you have deep dark brown almost black eyes like me, you probably have no color flecks in your eyes 🙂

So what did you come up with?

Cool
Jewel tones are your friend! Makeup and clothing that are blue, purple, blue-green, green, magenta, and some red shades are for you. You want to choose a foundation with a blue or pink undertone.

It can all be a bit confusing, so if you are still not quite sure as to what your undertone is, take a quick stop on my Pinterest board called “skin undertones”  I have a lot of pins about this subject that can help you!
