What’s the Best Diet? Healthy Eating 101 by Doc Mike Evans

You know I love me some makeup!  But there is so much more to “looking (and feeling) Joli good” than just what we put on our faces every day.

What is a diet?  Whether you are consciously on a “weight loss diet”or not, you still have a diet.  A diet can easily be explained as the “set of food rules that you follow for yourself.” Most of us seem to want weight loss at one point or another in our lives.  Is there a magic food formula?  Unfortunately, still NO!  We are not all genetically the same, so what is right for one person is not necessarily best for someone else.

While obesity is a major factor in a lot of diseases,  it is better to focus on health at every size.  Health should not just be a weight goal, but a lifestyle: lots of physical activity, regular meals, good social support.  Instead of just focusing on weight loss, focusing on healthy outcomes such as less cancer, heart disease, and longer life with better quality.

Active obese people tend to live longer than skinny sedentary people.

Losing weight, while it is not easy, isn’t actually the hardest part.  Maintaining that weight loss is trickier.  Overly restrictive diets are hard to maintain.  I am not saying that you have to change everything about your current diet, but sometimes just making small changes here and there make big differenced in the long run.

Consistency is more important than perfection! | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Studies have shown that something as simple as keeping track of your weight on a consistent basis helps with weight loss.  As well, keeping a food journal can actually double your overall weight loss! I write down everything I eat, whether good or bad to keep myself accountable and aware of what I am actually eating.  I think this is the #1 thing that has helped me to lose weight and I am hoping it will help me to maintain this weight loss in the future.

Think more about what is healthy to eat instead of all of what you should not be eating.

Most of us don’t overeat because we are hungry, we over eat because we are in the habit of overeating.  Some times simple changes like putting the cookies and snacks away in the closet and instead having fruit and veggies easily accessible can make healthy dietary choices easier without being overly conscious of the change.

Moderation: less meat, more veggies, having fruit for dessert and skipping processed foods.

Also, leave room for flexibility!  Make good choices 80% of the time and let yourself have a bit of indulge every once in a while. Healthy is a longterm lifestyle, not a short term quick fix.

Consistency is more important than perfection!

The first time I watched this video by Dr Mike Evens I started taking notes!  I love the way that the vastness and confusion of “healthy eating” and “diets” is broken down into smaller bites (pun totally intended. :-))

Please take 15 minutes out of your busy day to watch this video!

I know I personally feel so much better overall when I eat healthier, not just physically but mentally as well.  What do you think about overall health over weight?

Here is one of my very favorite Jillian Micheals quotes:

“Many are so preoccupied with what others think it defines their existence. When we fixate externally, it keeps us from truly knowing ourselves and our destiny. Most [people] fear looking inward for worry they won’t find greatness, but when you stop allowing others to define your worth, you’ll see—greatness exists in us all, waiting to be
 expressed”

**Update:

Initially, I found Jillian Michaels’ approach to exercise and dieting highly motivational. Her intense workouts and strict dietary guidelines pushed me to achieve remarkable physical results, which fueled my motivation and determination. I embraced her no-nonsense attitude and believed that pushing my body to its limits was the only way to achieve success. However, as time went on, I began to realize that this approach was taking a toll on my mental health. The relentless pursuit of physical perfection and the constant pressure I placed on myself led to feelings of anxiety, guilt, and a distorted body image. It was then that I decided to change my perspective and adopt a more balanced and loving approach to my body. By prioritizing self-compassion, listening to my body’s needs, and embracing acceptance, I discovered a newfound sense of mental well-being. This shift in thinking allowed me to find joy in movement, cultivate a positive relationship with my body, and ultimately, achieve a healthier and more sustainable approach to overall well-being.

The Trap Of Celebrating With Food

Over the last few months I have been on a journey from Flab to FAB.  If you have been following along, thank you so much for your support.  These last few pounds have been the toughest to shed!  I have 1.5 lbs to go, and it has been a struggle!

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have never had an issue with daily exercise. I love to get up early and get in a workout before the rest of my family is even awake.  My down fall has always been diet, even more specifically the sweet stuff!  The holidays are a tough time to be trying to lose those last few pound.  Some weeks I have been happy to just have not gained any weight.

I LOVE to eat!  I have had many conversations with fellow food lovers about where’s the best place to get homemade ice cream or freshly baked bread, or which restaurant has the best tasting menu.  I also love to cook myself.  I like to try new recipes, watch cooking shows and read cookbooks and food magazines.

My favorite kind of ice cream

While the occasional food splurge is fine, and actually part of a successful weight loss routine, it is important to keep it an occasional splurge. While these occasions don’t have to be huge major special events – My daughter got a 100% on her first math test- Yay! Lets get ice cream!  My son scored a goal in soccer, Yay! Let’s get ice cream!  I did awesome at my job interview!Yay! Let’s get ice cream! I got the job! Yay! Let’s get ice cream!  I had a great first day of work!  Yay! Let’s get ice cream! I need to be careful that  I only  make exceptions for true special occasions.

Often what ends up happening is that these “special occasions” can become a daily even. They can easily turn into… I folded all the laundry! Yay! Lets get ice cream! I found my missing earring! Yay! Lets get ice cream!  I am having a great hair day!  Yay! Lets get ice cream!  Today is Wednesday! Yay! Lets get ice cream!  My Boston Terrier, Tessie, is super cute! Yay! Lets get ice cream!   See where I am going with this…(also, can you tell I like ice cream? :-))

Look at that cute face!

While I have been on my Flab to FAB journey, I have had to start thinking about food and diet in a different way.  While good healthy food feels rewarding, food is fuel, not a reward.  Celebrating is fun, and celebrating with food is fun too, but it is not the only way to celebrate.

Instead of using food as a reward, I have been trying to reward myself in other ways.  Some ways include: getting a pedicure, buying new smaller clothes :-), getting some new makeup, or splurging on a new purse.  Sometimes the celebration is just giving myself a little bit of a break to sit down and read an extra chapter in a good book.  While I do still like to celebrate with food, I am slowly retraining myself to have a healthier relationship with food.

I hope that you found this helpful, and thank you for following along with me on my journey from Flab to FAB!

Do Detox Teas and Waters Really Work?

Detox |lookingjoligood.wordpress.comBesides a being lover of makeup and trying to look beautiful, I am also a Registered Nurse.  I love all the science behind health and wellness and how the body works.

Unless you have been living under a rock, or don’t ever go on social media, I am sure that you have heard about Detox Teas and Detox Waters.  Many of these products claim to flush fat and toxins from your body.

While this sounds like a great way to lose some extra weight, generally if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.  And… in this case, it is too good to be true.  These drinks do not melt away the extra pounds.

While many of these detox waters include cucumbers, lemon and tea, which have a natural diuretic effect (A substance or drug that tends to increase the discharge of urine.) you aren’t losing any actual body fat.  What you are losing is just a bit of excess water weight.  This water weight will return once you drink fluids or eat again.

Unfortunately, no detox tea or detox water or magic drink can flush out fat or toxinsDetox |lookingjoligood.wordpress.com from your system.
Do you know what can flush out the toxins your system?  Your kidneys, liver, skin (and even your lungs do a bit too.)  These organs are specifically designed to be constantly removing toxins from your body.  If you are a healthy person with properly functioning organs, you can not make them work better by drinking a detox drink.

(You know all those popular cleanses?  They can’t do it either.  Your healthy body is also designed to cleanse itself.)

Save your money and drink more regular plain old H2O.

Detox | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Drinking plenty of water provides many health benefits.  Some of these include, more energy and improved brain functions.  Drinking water before a meal can help you to lose weight due to having a feeling of fullness which in turn causes one to eats less.  Consistently drinking plenty of water will also help you to have regular bowl movement as well.

How much water should you drink a day?  Well, that depends on a lot of things.  Your height, weight and sex, how active you are as well as where you live.  The rule of thumb is to daily consume between 0.5-1 oz per pound you weigh.  For example, if you weigh 130 pounds, that would be between 65 to 130 ounces of water a day. (1.9 -3.8 Liters)

So in the end, unfortunately, there is no quick fix to weight loss and health.  If you want to lose weight and be healthy there is no way around it, you have to eat right, exercise consistently, get enough sleep, decrease the stress in your life, and drink a lot of water.

Flab to FAB · Health/ Fitness

Hi, My Name is Laura and I Am A Food Addict…

Some posts are easier to share than others…

Journey with me From Flab to FAB!

So, from the title you can already tell what this post is going to be about…  While I am not completely serious when I say that I am a food addict, I definitely have a love/hate relationship Eat to Live or Live to Eat |lookingjoligood.wordpress.comwith food.  I  love to eat, yet I hate the guilt that comes along with it.  It is a crazy cycle!

Some people are just naturally fit and thin, while others have to work really hard at it.  Some people are naturally built thicker and curvier.  Some people just naturally don’t like to eat a lot (what is their problem?! :-))  Other people love to eat!  Some people can eat whatever they want while others look at food and gain weight.

Growing up, I was always able to eat whatever I wanted and never gain weight.  Then I got married, and pregnant and then I hit my thirties.  While I am by no means unhealthy or overweight, I definitely have those few pesky pounds that I want to lose.

Just as much as I love to eat, I have always loved to exercise, but… unfortunately abs are made in the kitchen just as much as they are in the gym

healthy-food flab to FAB journey | lookingjoligood.wordpress.comI have tried to “diet” in the past and what ends up happening is that I get stressed out about everything that I eat and obsessed with all the things that I can’t eat.  Usually I end up super cranky and quit without seeing any results.

So, all this being said, I have recently started a healthy eating journey.  It is not always fun, and it doesn’t usually taste as good as ice cream, but it hasn’t been as hard as I thought.  I have been retraining my brain to think about food differently.  It is an everyday decision and it takes a lot of planning.  It doesn’t mean that I don’t still plan on posting awesome dessert recipes (or even eating awesome desserts), it just means that I have changed my way of thinking about dessert.

I plan to share some of my journey with all of you, and if you are interested, you can even join in and take the journey along with me!  Let me know what you think and if you have ever had similar struggles with food.
