Ditch The Diet for Healthy Habits

Smooth Operator…

~Ditch The Diet~

You are trying to be a healthier version of yourself! Instead of eating donuts and bagels for breakfast you have been proudly making smoothies instead. Good job! I am proud of you for making a positive change!

You have really been enjoying your healthy morning smoothie, but you expected the weight to just drop off. Why haven’t you seen any changes on the scale? What is going on?!

Here are some reasons why that morning smoothie may not be doing you any favors….

Yes, having a smoothie made solely from a variety of fruits is much healthier than eating a bagel with cream cheese! Keep in mind that even though fruit smoothies do have fiber and nutrients, they still have calories. and are still full of natural sugars.

I cannot even tell you how many times I have filled my blender with all the healthy ingredients that I can think of. Before I knew it, that yummy healthy smoothie has turned into a 650+ calorie breakfast.

Unfortunately, just because a food is nutritious doesn’t mean it’s low in calories. Certain foods such as avocados, dates, nuts, nut butters, whole milk yogurt, and oats can tack on a hundred calories each!

Even fruits like apples, pears, mangoes, cherries, and bananas can quickly add in extra calories. Don’t shy away from these healthy nutrient-rich ingredients — just use a small amount of each.

Making your morning smoothie with all kinds of different fruits could quickly turn your healthy smoothie into a high-calorie meal! Instead pair your fruit with a protein source such as milk, yogurt, protein powder, soft tofu, beans, nuts, or nut butter.

I have learned the hard way that instead of eyeballing and adding all kinds of tasty ingredients, measuring out ingredients is essential!

You will really want to keep the calorie count down especially if you’re pairing your smoothie with something else like a slice of toast or muffin.

Making Smoothies Even Easier | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Your smoothie should aim to have:
Calories: 300 to 400
Fiber: 5 to 10 grams
Protein: 13 to 20 grams
Carbs: 40 to 55 grams
Healthy fats: 10 to 15 grams
Sugars: 36 grams or less

The protein will give you lasting energy, the carbs give you quick energy, the healthy fats and fiber will keep you full longer. Sticking to this “formula” will help you to make a smoothie that will not only be filling but also help to maintain your blood sugar.

Ok, so you’re thinking thanks for all the info, that doesn’t help me when I am making my morning smoothie…

Here is what you really want to know, how do I make a smoothie that meets all of these requirements?

Here is a recipe that I love…

Chocolate Strawberry Banana Smoothie (365 cal)

5 frozen strawberries (50 cal)
1 frozen banana (90 cal)
1 cup spinach (7 cal)
6 ounces plain Greek yogurt (100 cal)
1/2 cup chocolate unsweetened almond milk (25 cal)
1/2 tablespoon peanut butter (95 cal)

Total: 53g carbs, 32g sugar, 8g fiber 8g fat, 26g protein,

This is another combo that I make the most often:
2 cups of greens (25 cal),
1 banana (90 cal),
1/4 cup blueberries (20 cal),
1/4 cup mango (50 cal) ,
1/4 avocado (80 cal)
1/2 tablespoon chia seeds: 30 calories or 1 tablespoon flax meal: 40 calories
total 295-300 cal.
I will also add some sort of protein either greek yogurt 100 cal, 1tbs PB 95 cal, or protein powder 130 cal

Here’s the calorie breakdown of other healthy ingredients you might want to add to your smoothie:

1 cup unsweetened soy milk: 80 calories
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk: 40 calories
1 cup coconut water: 43 calories
1 serving (about 35 grams) vanilla protein powder: 110 calories
1/2 cup nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt: 83 calories
1/2 cup vanilla soy yogurt: 105 calories
1/2 cup coconut milk yogurt: 90 calories
1/2 tablespoon chia seeds: 30 calories
1 tablespoon flax meal: 40 calories
1 serving soft tofu (1/5 package): 60 calories
1/4 cup cannellini beans: 50 calories
1 tablespoon almond butter: 95 calories

I hope this is helpful and that you continue to enjoy your morning smoothies!

Love and Life

I Love To Blog, BUT…

I love to blog and I love interacting with all of you, my blogging friends, but I love my kids more…

I love to blog | lookingjoligood.blog

Don’t worry, I’m not giving up blogging, or even taking an extended break!

It is just that during the summer, while my kids are on break from school, I won’t have as much time to write and work on posts.  My kids are, and will always be my first priority!

i-love-these-two | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

That being said, posts that take me less time to write, such as “No Gym No Problem!” and “Tip Tuesdays”,  and previously scheduled “Ditch The Diet” posts will continue to be posted, while posts that take longer to write such as product reviews and “Weekly Product Highlights” might be less frequent.

I will still be trying out all kinds of products, using samples, and will be making notes about my thoughts on them, but I just may have to postpone the actual review posts until the fall.

Stay tuned for a new fashion tips and tricks series that I have been working on coming sometime soon! (… well, maybe not so soon ;-))

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs, and Rosewater

~Weekly Product Highlight~ Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs, and Rosewater~Mario Badescu | lookingjoligood.blog

I had heard great things about this facial spray with aloe herb and rosewater, so I was very excited to see how it worked.  So many of the reviews say “this spray is life changing!”  Little did I know how quickly I would become obsessed with it!

I love to try new skin care products and pamper my skin!  I have normal to combo skin and get an occasional breakout here and there.  This spray has been leaving my skin feeling glowy moisturized and smoothed. The nozzle gives a nice fine spray, making it possible to be used as an after makeup spray as well.

Like the name states, this spray has a light refreshing rose scent.  Despite that fact that I love actual real flower roses, I’m not usually a big fan of rose scented things.  This spray is an exception, I really love the scent of it!  It is also available in an Aloe, Cucumber and Green Tea version.  I think that I am going to try that one next time.  At the rate that I am using this spray, that will be very soon…

Mario Badescu facial spray | lookingjoligood.blog
I’ve had this 4 fl oz bottle for about 4 weeks.

Here is how I have been using it:
I mist onto my face, neck, or hair whenever I feel like I want to, haha.😉 It is like giving my skin a little pick-me-up either before I put my makeup on or, post-makeup application to reduce a powdery looking finish.  I have been spraying my face either before or after (or both) applying my daily and nightly moisturizer. I’m telling you, I’m obsessed with this facial spray!  Despite the fact that I have a small face and I could probably get away with only using two spritzes at a time, I love to really go at it and use 4 sprays at a time. 😂  I have been using it at least twice a day, sometimes as many as four times a day.  Like I said, I’ve become pretty obsessed with this spray. Mario Badescu facial spray | lookingjoligood.blog

This spray is available in two versions and three sizes: Aloe Herbs, and Rosewater version and Aloe, Cucumber, and Green Tea version, and in 2, 4 and 8 fl oz bottles. The travel size 2 fl oz bottle is $5.00 USD, and a 4 fl oz bottle that I have now is $7.00 USD. Now that I know how much I love this product, next time I purchase it, I plan to pick up the 8 oz bottle which is $12.00 USD.

Caress Body Wash Forever Collection

~Weekly Product Highlight~Caress Body Wash Forever Collection~

The world’s first collection of body washes with Fragrance Touch Technology.  Touch your skin to release fine fragrance for up to 12 hours.

Caress Forever Body Wash | lookingjoligood.blog

I originally tried this body wash as a sample and quickly fell in love with it! It smells absolutely wonderful!  It has a great lather and leaves the skin feeling clean without being overly dry and tight.  It also has sparkles in it, who doesn’t love sparkles?!  It is crazy how long the fragrances in these body washes last!

The Caress Forever Body Washes have “fragrance touch technology” that is supposed to make the scent last longer.  As I have mentioned before, I am very sensitive to different fragrances.  I wasn’t sure if this body wash was going to give me a headache, so I was a bit apprehensive about using it at first. I was nervous that if it bothered me I might be stuck smelling it all day.  Fortunately,  it didn’t bother me at all, and I quickly fell in love with the beautiful scents.

“fragrance touch technology” Caress Forever Body Wash | lookingjoligood.blog

The “fragrance touch technology” really does make the scent last longer!  I notice the scent through out the day if I rub my hand on my skin several hours later, the scent seems to be reactivated.  So cool!

Don’t just take my word for it, this body wash won the Allure 2015 Break Through Award.

There are 4 scents available: Love Forever (red label), Adore Forever (deep pink label), Mystique Forever (purple label), Enchant Forever (blue label).

Each one has an interesting and complex mix of different scents with top notes, heart notes, and base notes.

Love Forever

Top Notes: Mandarin Orange and Peach

Heart Notes: Scarlet Red Rose, Peony and Freesia

Base Notes: Sandalwood and Vanilla Musk

Adore Forever:

Top Notes: Raspberry and Cassis

Heart Notes: Angel Face Rose and Muguet

Base Notes: Amber, Honey and Vanilla

Mystique Forever

Top Notes: Bergamot, Apple, Pink, Pepper

Heart Notes: Lotus, Jasmine, Sambac Absolute, Tuberose Absolute, Imperial Iris

Base Notes: Musk, Amber, Praline

Enchant Forever:

Top Notes: Bergamot

Heart Notes: Jasmine, Honeysuckle, Praline

Base Notes: Sandalwood, Musk, Vanilla

I have tried three of the four scents: Love Forever, Adore Forever, Mystique Forever. While I enjoy them all, out of these three, Love Forever is my favorite.

They have recently changed the packaging but the product and formula are still the same.  The larger curvy top is the old packaging, the thinner top is the new packaging.

A 13.5 fluid ounce/ 400 ml bottle costs between $4-$5 USD, but there are always sales going on and coupons available.  Worth every penny in my opinion!

Ditch The Diet for Healthy Habits

Baked Kale Chips

~Ditch The Diet~

kale salad | lookingjoligood.blog

I am always trying to broaden my leafy green horizons.

So while “This kale salad tastes like I’d rather be fat!”…these baked kale chips taste so awesome that I cannot stop eating them!

Here is a delicious, simple, and quick recipe for baked kale chips:

Kale and Olive Oil | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Ingredients

1 bunch or 1 bag of kale
1 Tablespoon olive oil (I prefer grapeseed oil)
1 Teaspoon seasoning of your choice (Mrs. Dash is great!)

Directions

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F

Line a non-insulated cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper.
With a knife or kitchen shears carefully remove the leaves from the thick stems and tear or cut into bite-size pieces. (don’t skip this step, these things taste nasty!)

Wash thoroughly and dry kale with a salad spinner.

Drizzle kale with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoning salt.*

*I prefer to add my oil and seasoned salt to a gallon sized zip top bag and shake it up until the kale is completely covered in the oil mix.

Baked Kale Chips | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Spread out evenly on the foil lined baking sheet.

Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 15 to 20 minutes.**

**I like mine to be extra crispy so I bake the kale for 20-25 min (10 minutes on each side. Then mixed up and an additional 5 min.)

Delicious Recipes

Delicious Fiddleheads

Does anyone else know what these tasty little veggies are?

FiddleHeads | lookingjoligood.blog

Fiddleheads or Fiddlehead greens are the furled fronds of a young fern, harvested for use as a vegetable. If unpicked, each fiddlehead would unroll into a new frond.

They are only in season for such a small amount of time, but if you see fiddleheads at the grocery store you’ve got to try them!

I’ve seen them in the woods all around our house, but I’m always afraid to pick them just in case I accidentally pick the wrong thing and poison myself. Lol!

If I were to describe them, I would say that they taste like if asparagus, baby spinach, and green beans had a baby, with a bit of nuttiness. How’s that for a description, haha.

how to make fiddleheads | lookingjoligood.blog

Wash them really well, blanch for two minutes then cook them on the stovetop with a bit of butter or olive oil for 3-5 minutes.

Trust me, you’re gonna L❤️ve them!
