Doucce Freematic Eyeshadow in Marisa Review

I received this eyeshadow in my March ipsy glam bag. I have received a few different products from ipsy from Doucce, but otherwise, I had never heard of the brand.   Ipsy marked this as a “Creator Fave” so I had high hopes for it.

Because of ipsy’s high recommendation, I decided to add this to the group of things I was trying for my current “How ’bout Them Samples” post.  As I started writing that post my review for this shadow was getting so long that I decided it deserved its own post…

doucce eyeshadow | lookingjoligood.blog

The last few times that I have received eyeshadows from ipsy they have given me some similar version of this rosy/orangey/cranberry red shade.  Generally, when it comes to eyeshadow, I lean towards neutral shades. Forcing myself to try out this Doucce Marisa shadow has really pushed me out of my usual everyday easy neutral comfort zone.

doucce marisa swatch | lookingjoligood.blog

The way I have been wearing this shadow while testing it out has been to put an eyeshadow primer on, a transition shade in the crease, and using a wet brush applying Marisa all over the lid and blending.  Once I apply and blend this shadow, the less rosy it looks and the more burnt orange it appears.

Despite the change from rose to orange, after a bit of work, I have been mostly pleased with the end result.  When using this shadow I always do my eyes first and then my face makeup afterward, you’ll see why below…

doucce fallout | lookingjoligood.blog

Here is what I think about this shadow…in the pan it is a beautiful sparkling deep rose color that is exactly what I love!  Although once swatched and applied, it is definitely has a more burnt orange undertone than a deep rosy pink…That is ok, not my favorite, but I could still work with it.

The metallic sparkles are gorgeous!  When applied dry the pigmentation and color payoff are only ok.  Once blended the sparkle and color fade significantly!  Applied with a wet brush or foiled in the pan the pigmentation is much better and the fallout is less significant.

While the shimmery metallic rosy orange color is quite pretty on lids, the fallout is insane!  Dry brush, wet brush, foiled in the pan, with primer, without primer, tapping my brush and then tapping it again…no matter how I used this shadow, there was so much fallout!

The back of the shadow has two tiny magnets on it to hold it into the quad or a z-palette

This 1.4 g size is a full-size shadow, the single shadows cost $10 each.  On the Doucce website, they have a customizable quad available for $35, which would make each shadow $8.75. There are 82 shades available: 15 matte shades and 67 shimmer shadows.

doucce quad | lookingjoligood.blog

What does the Doucce Website have to say about their shadows:

“A highly pigmented and passionately luxurious eyeshadow that serves as the building blocks of the Freematic Eyeshadow magnetic system. The 82 ready-to-wear colors come in both matte and shimmer textures, and can be used alone or within the Freematic system to create custom palettes. The versatile silky smooth powders are so rich it feels creamy. The fine weightless powders glide on easily and blend effortlessly without smudging or creasing. Apply dry for a more natural finish or apply wet for a more long lasting dramatic look.”

doucce shades | lookingjoligood.blog

Since this is the only Doucce shadow I have ever used, when it comes to application and fallout of the other shades, I don’t know if all the shadows by this brand are a similar formula. With 82 shades to choose from, I am really hoping that they are not all as terrible when it comes to fallout!

In summary:

Did I make it work while testing out this shadow?…Yes…Is this going to become a new go to look and go to shadow?… No. Do I recommend this eyeshadow in this shade?…I am going to have to say no.

Instead of spending $10 on one of these Freematic shadows, I would recommend spending $6 for a 1.5g MAC shadow (available in 112 shades) or $6 for a 1.8g Makeup Geek shadow (available in 103 shades) or $2.99 for a 2.3 g Maybelline Expert Eyewear single (available in 20 shades).  I highly reccommend these Maybelline shadows!  The shade Nude Glow is gorgeous!!!

How about you? Have you ever heard of the brand Doucce?  Have you ever tried any Doucce Freematic Eyeshadows?  What did you think?  Did you find that the color changed with blending and that it had a lot of fallout?

Birchbox April 2017

birchbox | lookingjoligood.blog

A few weeks ago I got a text message from my sister in law telling me about a great offer from Birchbox.  They were giving away a Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette with a “new” sign up and promo code.

To be honest, I have subscribed to Birchbox in the past and didn’t love it.  But I wanted the Smashbox palette, so I signed up right away and patiently waited for my box to arrive. (that’s a lie, I wasn’t patient at all…)

While each month my ipsy samples come inside a cute makeup bag, Birchbox samples are sent in a cute box. (How fitting since it is called a birchBOX.)

This month’s box has a brown paper bag look to it that says “Magic Inside” in black/deep brown script.  The inside is a super cute pink and colorful floral design. While I do like getting the makeup bags, I do like the nice cute sturdy boxes that I have received from Birchbox.  I have makeup stored in all the other boxes that I received way back when I used to get it every month.

Here is what I got in my April 2017 Birchbox:

amika Bombshell Blowout Spray

Smells great. I don’t tend to use these type of products due to the type of hair that I have.  I haven’t tried it yet, and who even knows if I will try it out, it might be amazing, not really my thing though.  I have a feeling that I will pass it along to someone else.

Coastal Scents Blush & Bronzer Palette

Am I just a huge baby when I get upset about these tiny little bronzer and blush samples?   Is it just me that gets mad? I mean, come on!  How in the world am I supposed to fit my brush in there?  It’ll take me forever to get the product on my whole face.  Maybe I will use it as an eyeshadow, I don’t know.  I would have rather gotten either a bronzer or a blush, but two tiny ones is just pointless to me.

rms beauty™ the ultimate makeup remover wipes

Birchbox, Birchbox, Birchbox, let’s talk here for a second. Not only did you send me a tiny little blush and bronzer “palette” but you gave me three makeup wipes?  No thanks!

I use coconut oil every night to remove my waterproof eye makeup.  These wipes are infused with coconut oil.  This should be a match made in heaven for me, right?  Wrong!

They are supposed to be a quick  “grab and go” wipe, but despite the fact that I use coconut oil to remove my makeup, I would never leave the oil on my face all night.  I can only imagine what my pillow cases would look like in the morning!

These wipes cost $16 for 20 wipes.  At that price, I am expecting something amazing!  What did I get? Basically a rough paper towel with a film of coconut oil on it. The sheet was small and only somewhat oily enough to take off my face makeup, and definitely too dry to remove my waterproof eye makeup with any effectiveness.  Yet despite it being too dry to remove my makeup, my hands were completely oily from the wipe.

It is a great idea, but it just didn’t work well enough at removing my eye makeup without tugging at my gentle eye area skin.

R+Co DEATH VALLEY Dry Shampoo

I feel bad that I am not more excited about getting this sample…So many people rave about how great this dry shampoo is, but I just don’t really use dry shampoo.  It has a great clean manly scent.  I would actually love this scent in a candle, and the packaging is super cute.

The Beauty Crop GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick Shade: Imma Bawse

If you have read many of my posts you already know that I love shiny glossy hydrating lip products.  That being said, the odds were already stacked against this product.  I am not a fan of liquid lipsticks at all!  I don’t like anything that makes my lips feel dry.

While I found it to be VERY pigmented, it never actually dried down completely like liquid lipsticks usually do.  Several hours later it was still transferring to my cup, my chin, my fingers. (not cute!)  Overall it wore off mostly evenly but made such a mess that I would never feel confident wearing this lipstick out in public.

bawse lilly singh smashbox | lookingjoligood.blogThe color is actually gorgeous, but not one that I would personally wear.  When my son saw me wearing it on my lips, he said “Mom! That lipstick!  You are too pretty to wear that color of lipstick!” Then he closed his eyes and said he couldn’t look at me while I was wearing it.  Lol, well, at least he is honest.

Also, anyone else feel as if the name of this lipstick is a complete rip off of the Smashbox liquid lipstick Bawse by Lilly Singh? I mean it is basically the same color and it is spelled exactly the same way.  (BTW: She is absolutely gorgeous and hilarious.)

Speaking of Smashbox…The only reason that I resubscribed to this box…

Smashbox Photo Matte Eyes Travel Palette

I’ll be posting a complete review of this palette soon so I won’t go into the details about it here now…. You’ll have to come back in a few days to read about what I think about this palette.

Here is one thing that I really like about Birchbox…They send a card with descriptions of each sample as well as the prices of the full-size products.

birchbox break down

Thanks, Birchbox,  for the “free” palette, but sorry, because you sent me terrible samples, I already canceled my subscription…  I definitely prefer more makeup samples and fewer hair and skin care samples.

What about you? Do you subscribe to Birchbox, what do you think about it?  Have you gotten any decent samples? I would love to hear your opinion in the comments!

I would choose ipsy over Birchbox any day!  I feel like my ipsy bags just keep getting better every month.  At the same price point, Birchbox just didn’t match up. If you want to read posts about my previous ipsy bags you can do so by clicking HERE.

Today’s tip has to do with getting ready for a big event:

Do not try out new hair and skin products the day of or day before a big event!

Do you have a special event coming up?  Don’t wait until the day of to start preparing for it.  If you have a hair mask or a face mask that you want to use to make your hair and skin look its best, start prepping and primping 5-7 days in advance.

Essence XXXL Shine Lipgloss Review and Swatches

~Weekly Product Highlight~ Essence XXXL Shine Lipgloss~

I was watching a video by Drugstore Maven, and she recommended the Essence XXXL Shine Lipglosses.  Being a huge fan of glossy lips, the next time I was at Target I picked one up.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you I instantly fell in love with this gloss as soon as I put it on!

The gloss goes on smoothly and evenly without feeling sticky at all.   It does not bleed outside the lip line. It has a great sparkly shine that is not glittery.  The gloss also wears off well.  I cannot stand it when a sparkly gloss wears off leaving a weird looking glittery residue on the lips. (not cute!)

The packaging is very simple and pretty yet sturdy. It comes in a transparent glass tube with a silver cap.  The name is on a label on the cap. The gloss has a long flat doe foot sponge tip applicator. I like the flat applicator because it holds a lot more product and applies the gloss nice and precisely.

The first shade I purchased was in 22 Nude Kiss. It has just a hint of pink shimmery color to it which can be worn alone or as a glossy topper over another lipstick.

After wearing Nude Kiss non-stop for several days, I knew that I had to get another shade of these glosses.  The second shade I picked up is 07 Big Night Out and 08 Glamour To Go. They are a sparkly mauve and a sparkly coral nude.

Essence XXXL Shine Lipgloss | lookingjoligood.blog

At only $2.49 a tube, this gorgeous lipgloss is a great deal!

As I do with most of my favorite makeup discoveries, I quickly shared it with my sisters and my sister in law.  The next day my sister sent me the below picture.  She got hers in 17 Fabulous Fuchsia.  Since then she told me that she loves it and has used her so much that it is almost gone.  A few days later she went back and picked up Nude Kiss as well.

Fabulous Fuchsia | lookingjoligood.blog

What does the Essence Website have to say about the XXXL Shine Lipglosses:

“Ultimate shine for your lips! The XXXL shine lipgloss pampers your lips without leaving behind a sticky feeling. Contains vitamin e and panthenol to moisturize and prevent lips from feeling dry. Available in 12 glossy shades.”

Now I have three of the 12 shades and I love them all.  They are all somewhat similar, yet a bit different, and all beautiful!

Ditch The Diet for Healthy Habits

The Skinny On Fat

~Ditch the Diet~

good fats vs bad fats | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Guess what…fats don’t make you fat.  Big shocker I know!

As I mentioned in a previous post,  macronutrients are nutrients that provide calories (or energy) for our bodies. There are three macronutrients:  Fat, Protein, Carbohydrate. (Fat provides 9 calories per gram.)

Fat might get a bad wrap, but it is actually essential for survival.  Fat is the most concentrated source of energy and is also needed for absorption of vitamins A, D, E, K, and carotenoids.

What does our body need fat for?

Energy
Absorbing certain vitamins
Maintaining cell membranes
Providing cushioning for the organs
Normal growth and development
Providing taste, consistency, and stability to foods

There are three main types of fat, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, and trans fat.

There are good fats and bad fats. Good fats come from things like chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, avocados, nut, seeds, olive oil and grape seed oil.

Eating large amounts of foods rich in saturated fats can raise your cholesterol levels, increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke, (and even some types of cancer.) If those saturated fat-rich foods are also high in dietary cholesterol, like bacon, the cholesterol levels tend to rise even higher.

Try to stay away from trans fat.  Trans fats are found in things like baked goods, snack foods, fried foods, and margarine. These types of fats increase your risk for heart disease.

Replacing saturated and trans fat in your diet with unsaturated fat has been shown decrease the risk of developing heart disease.

While it is great to see results on the scale, what is going on inside the body is more important.

The USDA recommends 20% – 35% of daily calories should come from fat.

Cowlicks!

cowlick | lookingjoligood.blog

Growing up it was my dream to be a hairdresser!  Although I didn’t end up choosing that as my career, all throughout nursing school I made extra cash by cutting the hair of all the girls that lived in the dorms.

Fast forward a decade and a half, (wow, has really been that long…)  I am still interested in cutting hair.  I don’t do as many haircuts as I did back in the day, but the ones that I do are more important to me because they are on my own head and the hair of my kids and husband.

I have been subscribed to Matt Beck’s YouTube channel for a while now.  He has so many awesome tips and tricks for cutting hair and getting the best style from your cut.

I have some crazy cowlicks going on in my hair!  Both my son and daughter have similar cowlicks as well.

There is always something new to learn and always some new technique to make things easier and the haircuts look better!

Tip Tuesday #61

Here is another tip for Tip Tuesday!

Tip Tuesday Make up tips and tricks every Tuesday | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

This week’s tip has to do with perfect under eye concealing!

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

It’s not just about finding the perfect product (I recommend the Instant Age Rewind by Maybelline), it is also a lot about technique.

This week’s tip:

Cancel out any creases in your under eye concealer before setting the area with powder.

After applying the concealer to your under eye area, take a minute to go back again and smooth out the concealer one more time before powdering.  You can use your finger, a brush, or a damp beauty sponge.  This seems like such a simple tip, but it will make a big difference in the look of the under eye area.  Keep in mind that powder will seal everything in, so smooth out your concealer before setting it.
