Happiness Even In Darkness

I saw this quote and thought that it was just too good not too share with all of you.

Happiness Can Be Found Even In The Darkest Of Times If One Only Remembers To Turn On The Light.

Plateau!!! Why Can’t I Lose Weight?!

Hitting a plateau is so annoying!  Every body is different, there is no magic formula or just one specific answer to how to get over a plateau.

you-are-here

Sometimes it feels like you are doing everything right and still not losing weight. You might need to ask yourself a few simple questions…

  • Are you really taking the best care of your body and health or are you just going trough the motions?
  • Are you being patient giving your body time to respond to healthy changes?

Or maybe you think you are doing everything right but in actuality you are missing something in one area or another…

  • What you are eating? (Are you eating too much? Not enough?)
  • How you are sleeping?
  • Are taking care of yourself?  How is your stress level?
  • What types of work outs are you doing? (Are you working out too much? Not enough?)

Losing weight is not just a simple formula, it is a very personal thing.  You may be working out and eating right but you are not sleeping enough or maybe you’re always stressed out.  Our bodies love to hang on to those extra few pounds just in case they need it later on.

I know that it is so annoying to be doing everything right and not see the scale moving. Remind yourself that even if the scale isn’t heading in the direction you want it to, your body might be changing in a positive way internally.

Listen to the signals that your body is giving you. Also, just because you have that perfect goal weight in your mind doesn’t mean that number is where your body can comfortably maintain itself.

Personally, I had a goal weight in my mind that I wanted to reach.  Once I reached that goal I was so proud of myself, but when it came time to maintain my weight at that weight it was really hard. My body wanted to rest about 3 lbs heavier than that goal number.  Instead of fighting it, I have embraced those 3 lbs, and because of that decision I have not had any difficulty with my weight maintenance.  (I even indulge with a small bowl of ice cream every now and then, I couldn’t do that when I was trying to keep those 3 lbs off.)

While I am not a wellness coach, nutritionist, or personal fitness trainer, I am a nurse who loves to learn as much about health and wellness as I can!

Focus…

The answer is not to focus on what we are giving up, not on what we can’t have, or what we are missing out on.   Instead to focus on the health; focus on what we are getting and gaining and how wonderfully amazing that in itself is.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, it was built brick by brick.  Choose to take back your health one day at a time!  Day by day, meal by meal, choice by choice.

“It’s A Nurse…”

There are some days when it feels like no one notices all of the sacrifices we nurses make.  We get attached to our patients.  We don’t do it for the glory or accolades.  We do it because we really care about our patients.  We cry in the break room or bathroom or the med room. Sometimes it is so draining. Then someone writes a letter like this, and it makes it all worth it!

Saying Goodbye…

Goodbyes are never easy…

I’ve been working at the Infusion Center for about 8 months now.  In these last 8 months I have learned so much and stretched myself further than I have in a long time.  I have faced some new fears (performing a therapeutic phlebotomy) and overcome some old fears (Am I going to remember how to be a nurse after taking an 8 1/2 year maternity leave?!). I have gotten to know some really awesome coworkers and met some great patients and their family members.

Overall the last 8 months have been enjoyable and a great learning experience for me.

For eight years, in the happiness and business of being a stay at home mom, I had almost forgotten what it is like to get attached to a terminally ill person…almost…

This past week was not an easy week at work. Even as I am writing this I can feel the pang of pain in my chest and my eyes getting teary. I had to say goodbye to a special patient.  He and his family had to make the tough decision to discontinue treatments and go on Hospice.

Mr. D* will always have a special place in my heart.  Like me he has a French last name, like me he also likes to talk a lot,  like me he often smiles even when things are not going his way…  After heading back to work after 8 1/2 years, he was the first IV stick I missed and subsequently so, the first IV I successfully started (he graciously let me try again for a second attempt.)  Something about that first little victory together made us fast friends.  Whenever he came in to get treatments, whether I was his nurse for the day or not, I always made sure I went and talked with him.

On Monday after he finished his infusion before leaving as he always does, he came over to say goodbye to me.  He told me that he wouldn’t be coming for treatments anymore and that they had decided to start Hospice care.  I wasn’t expecting to hear that and was caught off guard by his decision.  While I can usually keep it together, I had a very hard time holding my tears back.

I only hope that I am making as big of an impact on my patient’s lives as they are making on me!

Am I Enough?

Do you ever ask yourself the question “Am I enough?”

Am I good enough? Am I doing enough? Am I happy enough?  Is my house clean enough? Am I beautiful enough? Smart enough? Skinny enough?… The list can go on and on.

Quite often I give myself a hard time.  I expect near perfection from myself and get upset when I don’t reach it. I need to remind myself that all I can do is my best and if I am doing my best I am enough!

When I fail, I am still loved. I am not perfect, but I am still precious.

I Can and I Will

This time of year is so busy and I often feel as if I can’t get every thing done while still doing it all well.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes I need a little bit of extra encouragement.  When things get busy and my schedule is packed full and I feel like I can’t do it all, I try to remind myself that I can and I will!  If you need a bit of extra encouragement today here it is…You can and You will!
