Love and Life

Back To School Blues

Summer is my very favorite time of the year. I love that the days get longer and warmer.

Our family had such a great time together this summer. We had a lot of fun traveling, going to the beach, the zoo, and the fair, swimming in the pool, spending time with friends and each other.  The days of summer may be longer, but they really seem to go by so much faster.

Unfortunately, while I do enjoy the beauty of fall, it also means that the time of year has come that the summer break has to end.   I wish summer break lasted all year long, but like all good things it must come to an end. My kids are now back in school and I am back to working more hours at the infusion unit.  I am very grateful for a wonderful summer filled with happy memories.

How ’bout Them Samples #3

I have been doing really well with not making any unnecessary beauty purchases!  I don’t think that I have ever gone this long before.  So far, so good.  I have made one purchase that was unnecessary, but that is another post…

As part of my self imposed “strict no buy”, I decided to use neglected samples that I have already received.  Since I started doing this a few months ago I have really enjoyed trying out new things.

I have so many samples from ipsy bags, or Target boxes and others from Walmart beauty boxes.  I think a lot of times the excitement of getting the new things is greater than that of actually trying out and using the samples.  I will let you know in a few weeks what I think of each thing and if I would purchase these items based on my thoughts from these samples.

Here is the third group of what I have decided to try out…

Lorac Refined Romance Eye and Cheek Palette

Lorac Refined Romance Eyecheek Palette | lookingjoligood.wrodpress.com

A few weeks ago I was looking online at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I wasn’t planning on buying anything when all of a sudden I spotted the Lorac Refined Romance Eye/cheek Palette.  You may remember that I am on a strict self imposed no buying of new makeup.  You may also remember that I really really love LORAC.  I went back and forth about whether I wanted to buy another palette.  I decided that at a price of only $18, I just couldn’t pass up this palette.

Let me just cut to the chase...It is worth every cent!

The packaging is a sturdy glossy black cardboard with beautiful pink floral artwork on it. It is the same size as the Pro Palettes, but contains fewer shades.  Each of the 6 shadows ia a larger pan size than the pro palettes. There are six eyeshadows (2 matte 4 shimmery), two highlighters, and a blush as well as a full-size mirror.

As far as I can tell, the palette doesn’t have the shade names written on it anywhere, it just says shade 1-6 and highliter 1and 2, but according to the Nordstrom website, the shades do have names…

Eyeshadows:

  • Ivory Shimmer
  • Gold Shimmer
  • Burgundy/Brown Shimmer
  • Light Rose/Taupe Matte
  • Light Purple Shimmer
  • Burgundy/Brown Matte
Face Powders:
  • Cream Shimmer
  • Light Pink Shimmer
  • Rose Matte Blush

The above swatches are on my bare skin, I didn’t use any primer. Both the matte and shimmery shades are equal in intensity and pigmentation.

The shades are highly pigmented, soft and smooth easy to work with and blend. They go on beautifully. I really feel like this is such a great palette for only $18, it has the quality of a $40 Lorac palette.  With these beautiful neutral shades you can transition from summer right into the fall and even the winter months.

Lorac Refined Romance Eye Palette | lookingjoligood.wrodpress.comThe shadows are very softs, so be careful with it.  My taupe matte shade was a a little cracked when I received my palette. I could probably send it back and get a new one, but I am not sure if I want to go through all the hassle. Of course, I can still use it no problem, but it isn’t perfect…sigh…Lorac Refined Romance Eye Palette | lookingjoligood.wrodpress.com

The two highlighters are shimmery and smooth, they don’t have chunky glitter in them like some highlighters do.  The pink rosy blush is a beautiful matte shade.  The below swatches are on my bare skin, I didn’t use any primer. Both the matte and shimmery shades are equal in intensity and pigmentation.

This is a limited edition, Nordstrom exclusive.  I got mine during the Anniversary sale, but it is still available now for $18.  I’m not sure how long it will be available so don’t wait too long if you’re thinking about getting it. It’s definitely worth the money!

Ditch The Diet for Healthy Habits · Health/ Fitness

6 Ways to Ditch Dieting For Good

It’s Not About Dieting It’s About a Healthy Lifestyle

1)Find healthy foods you love:  Since I have changed my eating habits I have found so many foods that I thought I hated, but I actually now love.  Eggplant, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Roasted cauliflower, Baked Kale chips, Sweet potatoes, Mushrooms. (I still hate cooked peppers, don’t think that will ever change.)  These are all things that I never would have eaten 18 months ago, yet they are now part of my every day diet.

2)Get a routine: Make it easier on yourself to make better choices.  Have your fridge stocked with fresh fruits and veggies.  Set regular meal times and don’t let yourself graze and snack. Keep yourself accountable with a food and fitness journal.  Make a plan and stick to it!  It is not about perfection it is about consistency.

Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail! | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

3)Do exercises you enjoy:  I don’t like to run.  So you know what, I don’t do it.  There are sooooo many other way to get in a great cardio workout without having to pound the pavement.   The more time I have spent doing different types of physical actives I have discovered things that I love and things that I don’t enjoy: I hate lunges, but I love squats.  I hate pushups but I love plank ups.  I love to lift weights and strengthen my muscles. Find what you enjoy and do it!

4)Always have a goal: The scale is not the only place to have goals.  There are so many other ways to stay motived and push yourself. Recently I have been pushing myself to increase my reps as well as my weights.  It is so satisfying to reach a goal and set a new one!

Flab to FAB Progress | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

5)Indulge: You know I love sweets!  If you know you are going to a birthday party or a friends BBQ let yourself indulge within reason.  Denying yourself can lead to unwanted binges.  Instead be strict with your diet leading up to the time before the indulgence. And do not, I repeat DO NOT make yourself feel guilty about it later on. Occasionally enjoying a sweet treat or special meal is an absolutely necessary part of a feasible healthy lifestyle plan.  This leads me into my next point…

M&M's chocolate chip cookies | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

6)Don’t focus on denial: How true is it that all you want is what you can’t have!  If you want a french fry, have a fry or two, you don’t need to eat an entire large fry, but a fry or two might be just the thing to keep you from derailing your entire healthy plan.

After a few weeks you won’t even have to think about these changes.  Making a lifestyle change is worth the time and hard work it takes. Remember, It’s Not About Dieting It’s About Lifestyle! Long lasting results are so much more satisfying than short ended quick results from a fad diet. You and your health and wellness are worth it!

Love and Life

Just Bloom!

Recently I have been thinking about the effects of comparison and competitiveness . I am not one of those crazy competitive people.  I don’t get mad if I lose a game or get upset if I am not always #1.  I don’t need to win at every single thing I do. I don’t feel the need to constantly prove to everyone that I am the best at everything.  But…when it comes to certain things that I think I am good at I do have a super competitive spirit.

A Flower Does Not Think of Competing With the Flower Next to It. It Just Blooms! | lookingjoligood.wrodpress.com

I think that having a spirit of competitiveness is both a good and bad thing.  It is often nice to have competition to help give a push for us to be better. Some people bring out my good competitive side.  These people make me want to be a better version of myself. A few years ago while at my husband’s Aunt’s funeral,  I remember as everyone was talking about what a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and person she was, I was inspired to be a better person myself.  She lived such a positive and influential life that I wanted to be a better person.

Other people bring out the negative competitive side of me and make me want to be better than they are.  See the difference…While competition is not a bad thing, I think that comparison usually tends to be a negative thing. Knowing the difference between the two is not always easy.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”-Theodore Roosevelt

I think in this world of social media, it is so hard not to get sucked into comparing ourselves with others. Due to social media we see so much more of people’s “private” lives. The problem is that we are usually comparing all of our flaws with the snapshots of a  edited filtered picture perfect life.  Their reality is that they also have flaws that we do not see.

Sometimes, I have to stop and ask myself “Why am I doing what I am doing?”  Sometimes I know exactly why.  Sometimes the answer is clear and positive.  Sometimes I don’t really know what my motivation is.  Sometimes I have to really take a step back and be honest with myself, why am I doing what I am?  I don’t always like the answer that I have to give myself.

Don't compare your Beginning with a Middle | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

Galatians 6:4

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,

My husband has the perfect balance of competitiveness without comparison.  He doesn’t let others effect him negatively. His competitive spirit gives him motivation without being a detriment. He definitely has a solid self worth.

Who is your competition. | lookingjoligood.wordpress.com

I am glad when I can recognized when feelings of comparison and competitiveness are affecting me negatively. When I feel myself comparing and being competitive in a negative way, I have been trying to distance myself from the source. I remind myself that the only person that I need to be competing with is who I see in the mirror.  I need to focus on being a better version of myself than I was yesterday… it is not always easy.

2 Corinthians 10:12

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.
